Makeup is part of the daily routine of countless women (and a few good men). Why women wear makeup is a complicated question, that often comes down to arguments of alleged and arguably false agency - paralleled in conversations about the choice to shave one's legs/armpits - complicated of course by societal beauty standards that put an immense amount of pressure on women's appearances, emphasizing the necessity to be as soft, supple, and attractive as money can ... There are few things more intimate and magical than a bathroom haircut from a friend, a relative, or a lover. The technique is also one of Jane Birkin’s secret beauty tricks. In a piece for The Guardian, she writes, “My best friend cuts my hair with kitchen scissors.” The 66-year-old fashion icon also likes to keep it simple with her favorite outfit, “an old pair of jeans, Converse and a man’s jersey.” She ... I recently came in contact with Beauty Without Cruelty. I was drawn to their array of colorful lipsticks and, of course, the idea of all-natural beauty. I found out their products are 100% vegetarian and 100% natural. The company was actually founded by an animal welfare organization, so you know they're legit. Naturally, their mantra is all in the name. They sent over a few products and I'd like to tell you a little about products ... Read More

Fantastic campaign alert! Stop what you're doing and look at these photos from the MADE UP Experiment.
Makeup is a HUGE part of gender performance - it's tied to femininity like blonde on a Barbie. We're taught to follow certain customs in order to be read as feminine, while men are taught to perform masculinity. These rigid gender roles limit self-expression and individuality, and lots of people are fed up with that.
MADE UP is showing how the ... Read More

Photoshop is often used to exaggerate and warp women's bodies into looking unnatural and adhering to impossibly high standards of beauty. Artist Nickolay Lamm and collaborating artist Nikolett Mérész decided to use photoshop to do good instead. After seeing the viral photo of Barbie without makeup by Eddi Aguirre, Lamm wanted to create more realistic versions of the more popular dolls. He deemed the Aguirre version too excessive, stating ... Read More

New York photographer Leland Bobbé's project “Half Drag” has sprung into full fruition. Just this past March, he photographed drag queen Sabel Scities with drag makeup on half of his face and au natural on the other. Bobbé posted the stunning portrait online, stating that he had four more different photos in the same style and that his goal was to try and see where these might take him. Only a few months later, the project ... Read More

The relationship between women and fashion is complicated, or at the very least, layered. We all need to buy clothes. That one’s obvious, or like the first layer. The second level of this cake (I’ve made it a cake) is the clothes that we buy reflect how we are judged. Teen girls all over the internet are counseling each on how to dress like a certain persona (i.e. Wear hemp bracelets if you want to be a surfer). At the top of our cake ... Read More

I have kind of a weird relationship with makeup. As a kid I hated it because my mom made me an enabler to her Macy’s makeup counter addiction: I’d fidget for what seemed like hours while a woman in a white lab coat paid what sounded like empty compliments to my mother’s skin as she applied "eyebrow gel" or something equally unnecessary-seeming. I remained completely disinterested in wearing it myself until two years ago, when I discovered the ... Read More
