Founding Blondie member Chris Stein is releasing vintage photos of the band online starting this week. Some of the pictures are from the beginning era of the iconic rock band’s career, some were taken on tour, and some are of them chillin’ with friends like Andy Warhol and Joan Jett. When asked about the shots, Stein reflected, “There was a lot of cool stuff happening in the late 70s and I was lucky enough to be in the middle of it with a camera.  Posting them online and having them reach a new, younger generation of fans is really cool.   I’m sure you won’t mind that I’m not reciting this letter out loud to you on YouTube, the way a 14-year-old Twilight fan would. People are so full of feelings about you lately, Kristen Stewart—about your affair, your breakup, your public apology, your reconciliation. I have feelings about you too, but I’ll do my best not to make this weird. I’m sorry that I didn’t have the best impression of you at first, when I caught New Moon on a plane. Read More
D.C. ladies, now is your chance to celebrate women who rock! I have a friend who keeps telling me that cats invented the Internet and I’m starting to believe him. Every blog or tumblr worth checking out always has something to do with cats. Case in point, Lolcats, the site that just lets you look at cats doing hilarious, adorable things all day long. But maybe you want something more specific. Maybe you want to see cats that look like pirates or maybe Hitler or Parks And Recreation’s Ron Swanson. It’s all out there! You don’t even have to search that hard to find it. Read More
After New Kids on the Block, Jonathan Knight, came out earlier this week to a chorus of sarcastic “who knew?” and “who cares?” Mary Elizabeth Williams of Salon.com took it upon herself to explain pre-teen gals attraction to gay pop stars. According to Williams, heartthrobs occupy a brief moment of innocence in a young girl’s sexual awakening. A time when a young girl “wants a boy like those purity vow-taking Jonas Brothers. A boy like Bieber. Read More
It’s that time of year again folks--the time when we devote numerous pages in celebration of awesome female musicians and songstresses.   This long list of ladies includes Jill Scott, CocoRosie, Kelis, Dum Dum Girls, Karen Elson, and Wanda Jackson.  Gracing our cover are She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward who explain exactly what makes them such a harmonious duo (hint: it's not just Zooey's kitten-like charm and angelic voice). Read More
Joan Jett is back in the public eye with the release of The Runaways movie in March of this year, but the movie only captures a small portion of this rock-and-roll heavyweight’s epic and impressive career.  Thankfully, Todd Oldham has released a beautiful and well-rounded monograph of the legendary artist, aptly titled, Joan Jett.  Oldham compiles over thirty years of photos, interviews, and other unreleased ephemera in over 200 pages into a linear narrative that tells the story Jett, The Runaways, and The Blackhearts, all from Jett’s perspective. Review: The Runaways

BY Emily Rems in Music

Flicks about girl bands often follow the same trajectory: rebellious young women wanna skip town on the high heels of their rock ‘n’ roll dreams, but men tell them it’s impossible because “girls can’t rock.” Through a series of montages, the band ultimately gets good enough to prove they deserve a chance. And once given that big break, they launch headlong into all the pitfalls of fame. Think Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, think Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, and yes, think of the bio-pic The Runaways as well. All follow along these same lines. Read More
Finally!  A teaser trailer for The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie. Emphasis on the word 'teaser' -- it's less than a minute long. But you get to see 1) Dakota wearing some amazing '70s red streak blush and 2) K-Stew smash a chair. I've already watched it 3 times in the past 10 minutes. You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this video Photo courtesy steadydietoffilm.typepad. Read More
