A 22-year-old trans woman of color (TWOC) found dead in a vacant field in Texas on July 29th has finally been identified as Shade Schuler. Schuler is the 13th trans woman murdered in the United States in 2015, meaning this year's total already exceeds the number of transgender women killed in 2014.
When found, Schuler was originally identified as a male. With help from Trans Pride Initiative’s Nell Gaither, though, authorities correctly identified Schuler as a trans woman, ending a two-week investigation. Read More

Earlier this year, the My Brother’s Keeper program, a national initiative with the goal of improving the lives of boys and young men of color (specifically Black and Latino youth) was established.
The initiative itself is somewhat flawed in that it is perpetuated by a rhetoric that supports white supremacy. While, yes, the fact that the first Black president is coming out with this type of program is eons beyond what we would expect a white president to do for Black and Latino youth, Obama has a peculiar way of going about it. Women’s position in Egyptian society has become so dire that they are disappearing from the public sphere just so they don’t have to deal with men. The sexual harassment and assault that occurs everyday has dramatically increased within the past year, most likely due to interior instability.
After the Arab Spring, Egypt has really been in political and social limbo, and the women are suffering most of all - an environment with an undercurrent of indecision and ambivalence has made it socially acceptable to accost them. Read More
