Rashida Jones' soulful songstress sound is featured on Boss Selection's new single, "Flip And Rewind." Since she is one of our favorite feminists in Hollywood (and a former BUST cover girl!), the news that she collaborated with L.A.-based artist Boss Selection was pretty exciting. It's not surprising that Rashida is musically inclined–it's in her blood. Her dad is revered music producer and artist Quincy Jones, who has won more Grammys than any living musician. "Flip And Rewind" is the first single out for Boss Selection's album "Volume One," set to be released Dec. 8. Read More
Check out this new video for Maya Angelou’s track “Pickin’ ‘Em Up,” off the recently released album, Caged Bird Songs. Named after her 1969 autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the album combines Angelou’s vocal performances with rad hip-hop and funk beats. Angelou’s grandson, Colin Johnson, told NPR that he hopes this blend will appeal to younger generations. "One of the things that she speaks to, for me at least, is our humanity and where we can go as a people coming together," he says. "It's a valuable message, no matter what generation. Read More
We all know her as Susan Fischer, the rookie security guard at Litchfield Penitentiary on the hit Netflix original series, Orange Is The New Black. As a mousey and quiet do-gooder on the show played by talented improviser and actress, Lauren Lapkus, her character aims to please. But now, with her new podcast out and debuting as the #1 iTunes Comedy Podcast, With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus is anything but polite. Read More
Throwing Shade is the kind of podcast you would make with your best friend. Just like how Broad City portrays Abbi and Ilana's friendship so perfectly that you feel like you and your friend ARE Abbi and Ilana, Throwing Shade is like you and your friend but even wittier, and with microphones. Self-described "feminasty" Erin Gibson and "homosensual" Bryan Safi met at UCB LA but really clicked when they were both writing for Current TV, where Erin hosted "Modern Lady" and where I first watched Bryan Safi hosting "That's Gay.   On a Friday evening in Harlem, I met up with Mitra Kaboli, one of the Producers and Editors for the feminist podcast Audio Smut. On June 17, Audio Smut shot to number one on iTunes in the sexuality category, beating out famed talk personalities like Dan Savage. Big things are happening in the radio world for this team, primarily made up of young women. Read More
San Francisco based singer/songwriter, Rykarda Parasol, has teamed up with multi-talented L.A. producer, musician, and singer, Dante White Aliano for the remix of "Your Arrondissement Or Mine?" one of the many great tracks of off Ms. Parasol’s latest album Against The Sun (BUST #82 Music Review, Aug/Sep 2013 issue).  Dante White Aliano is best known for his bands Dante Vs Zombies and Starlite Desperation, and Rykarda and Dante have also recorded a duet for her fourth forthcoming album, scheduled to be released in 2015 and available on iTunes and Spotify. I wonder if (and highly doubt) Apple realized the irony of censoring the word “vagina” out of the title of Naomi Wolf’s new book, Vagina: A New Biography.  The point of the book is to educate people about the vagina, and therefore about women – striving for a greater understanding and respect. And the title was clearly chosen at least in part to provoke and to de-stigmatize the perfectly harmless word that recently had Michigan legislators wringing their hands and giving each other cootie shots.
