For seven years, NBC’s The Golden Girls brought the fantastic lives of Blanche, Rose, Sophia, and Dorothy into our televisions. It has since passed down to our younger generation through syndication and popular culture.
Unlike many other shows featuring a group of women, the Golden Girls weren’t young twenty-somethings trying to figure out their lives, these were fifty (and eighty) somethings trying to figure out their lives. The show reminded us that ... Read More
The New Republic’s Laura Bennett has something important to say about Betty White’s recent roles in her essay “Betty White Is Not a Sex Machine: Our Cruel Obsession with Dirty Old Women.” While she acknowledges that elderly women in the media have gained traction, ceasing to be mostly “sexless [...] prudish nags,” she sees an increase in sexual exploitation of older women. From Betty White’s role in Hot in Cleveland to ... Read More

HOW many times have you said to yourself, “I love watching Golden Girls reruns, but I wish I could take it one step further—if only I had a safe space where I could dream up my own Dorothy Zbornak zingers and Blanche Devereaux double entendres, and maybe lay a tiny plastic cheesecake on the kitchen island?” Well, get ready, because your dreams are about to come true for the extremely reasonable price of $175. Thanks, Etsy!

Although “Thank You for Being a Friend” is pretty much perfect for the vibes of NBC’s beloved Golden Girls, the song was not actually written specifically for the show. The original song was written by Andrew Gold in 1978. The voice we hear during the intro is Cynthia Fee, who re-recorded the song for the show, which premiered in September of 1985. Listening to the original is kind of mind-blowing, so let’s start this weirdfest by reminding ... Read More

Let’s face it: summer network TV programming sucks.
This is usually the time of year when cable and the premium channels thrive and having a Netflix subscription becomes dire.
Fortunately, it appeared that Betty White’s new TV Land sitcom, Hot In Cleveland might be a promising new option.
The show’s debut last Wednesday pulled in a TV Land record of 4.75 million viewers, thus making it the most-watched telecast in the ... Read More
To celebrate the life, career, and general awesomeness of actress Rue McClanahan, the Hallmark Channel will be airing four back-to-back episodes of The Golden Girls each day this week from 9a.m-11a.m and then repeated from 11p.m-1a.m.
The selected episodes feature the finest moments of the ever-so sassy and promiscuous Southern Belle, Ms. Blanche Devereaux throughout the show’s seven seasons.
Tonight the tribute kicks off with the episode ... Read More

Tim Tebow's anti-choice Super Bowl commercial might be getting all the attention, but I needed a second pass at this Snickers ad featuring Betty White. Not bad for someone who just celebrated their 88th birthday!

Ok, this is the most bizarre tribute to The Golden Girls EVER. And possibly the weirdest thing you'll see today. Artist James Kuhn can paint his face to look like pretty much anything. From Shrek, to a human hot dog face, his work shows a deeper dedication to lipstick, powder and paint than Marilyn Manson (who, incidentally I think he has also imitated). What you are seeing here though is THREE GOLDEN GIRLS covering his entire head. Watch the video too, for ... Read More

Picture it... an all-drag cast reenacting two timeless Christmas episodes from our fav single retirees, The Golden Girls. Like a midnight gossip sesh over a slice of cheesecake, it's almost too good to be true.
San Francisco's Trannyshack will put on the holiday homage to Miami's hottest foursome at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory (1519 Mission St.) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday nights between now and the 26th (excluding Christmas Eve and ... Read More
