According to a recent study by San Diego University, not much progress is being made in the movie biz regarding female directors, producers, and execs. The percentage of women doing major behind-the-scenes work -- from writers to cinematographers – was only 17%, which was the same number in 1998. This fact is even more disappointing when the data shows that it was a 1% increase from 2013’s figures. This means that there was a slight regress rather than any progress at all. What’s more, the number of films directed by women has declined to 7% versus the 9% it was in 1998. Read More
Terry Crews, the former NFL player, current Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor, and author of Manhood: How to Be a Better Man - or Just Live With One, delivered the keynote address at a conference addressing violence against women and new directions for masculinity. So, now I’m sitting here watching this guy --
speak candidly with Elamin Abdelmahmoud about feminism:
What we’re talking about is gender equality -- true gender equality. But the problem is that men have always felt they are more valuable. Read More

Prepare to get your girls out, because the Free the Nipple film trailer is finally here!
If you’re someone who is generally not concerned with the liberation or censorship of half the population’s areolas, let’s back up a step and fill in the holes. In America today, there are 37 states that prohibit a woman from appearing topless in public, and that includes breastfeeding. Illegally exposing her nipple can result in up to three years in jail and a $2,500 fine. Read More

Start carving those pumpkins kids, 'cuz Halloween is right around the corner. October 31st is, in my not so humble opinion, the sexiest holiday, depending on whether or not you find stuffing a Thanksgiving turkey at all sexual. To each her own. Anyway, the annual celebration is guaranteed to bring with it an onslaught of girls dressed in skimpy renditions of cops, pirates, or bunnies.
If that’s your bag and you feel confident as hell walking down the street wearing a potentially flammable ensemble, then by all means, you do you, girl. Read More

California Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed SB-1350 and SB-1358, sister bills which would have mandated that baby diaper changing stations be made accessible to both men and women in public restrooms. Despite bi-partisan support at the senate level, Brown said he vetoed the bills on principle.
“At a time when so many have raised concerns about the number of regulations in California, I believe it would be more prudent to leave the matter of diaper changing stations to the private sector," stated Brown in his veto message. Read More

The Fire Department of New York’s annual calendar is known for its manly babes flexing their six-packs, which could only come from the hours of work they do saving the lives of New Yorkers while risking their own.
While admiring the eye candy has been great, no women have ever been featured in the magazine. Danae Mines wanted to change that; from her 11 years of experience as a New York fire fighter, she stated that she “wanted [her] picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see [her] and know that they can do this job. Though the Church of England has some notoriously anti-woman roots (Beheading of Anne Boleyn? Rejection of Queen Elizabeth?), this influential Anglican institution is slowly making its way into the 21st century.
As of yesterday, July 14, women can officially be ordained to serve as bishops in the Church of England. Nice! Delayed, but nice!! The vote was met with (almost) unanimity in the House of Bishops, which is a big step up from the 2012 vote - which was shot down by a small margin. Read More

Oh Lizzy, I couldn’t agree more. We women have been gracing the world with our comedic talents for far too long. It’s time for the boys, with their biologically inferior jokes, to share a little of the glory. Check out her interview on Comedy Bang! Bang! about how the comedy world should be a little more equal for the genders:
Man, nothing I love more than some good satire. Read More

When I saw Holly Wilsons ‘Bring Your Dick To The Table’ Kickstarter I was really weirded out. Wilson is a sculpture artist who believes in "storytelling." After experiencing discrimination while negotiating contracts with a male gallery owner, she decided to suck it up and "act like a man" to achieve what she wanted. In her Kickstarter, she hopes to distribute penis shaped pocket-sized sculptures for women to carry around in hopes that when they feel the tiny trooper in their pocket, they can feel empowered enough to achieve greatness.Hahahahaha!Oh, wait. She's serious. Read More

Despite the last decades’ progress, we have a ways to go before we live in an equal world: “we [women] make less money, have more difficulty accessing education and affordable healthcare and face much more violence,” writes TIME’s Jessica Roy. UN Women, a sector of the UN that spotlights women’s issues, recently released a new ad campaign that expresses just how unequally the global community treats women. Read More
