California has officially banned the forced sterilization of female inmates, following the signing of SB 1135, Gov. Jerry Brown announced on Thursday. The law will take effect on Jan. 1, a fact which invokes shock that forced sterilization wasn’t already prohibited, and that prisoners will technically have to wait three months for the guarantee of basic reproductive freedoms.  The legislation was introduced following a report from the Center for Investigative Reporting that inmates were sterilized at two California prisons as recently as 2010. For you girlies who don’t know, compulsory sterilization (or, forced sterilization) is a government program that sterilizes people without their consent. Many countries, even our own, use population control and determined "sexual deviancy" as an excuse to sterilize. Eugenics refers to the practice of cleansing a population of “undesirables" — and distressingly enough, this concept is now being used as a punitive punishment for the incarcerated.   There is some serious sketchiness up in the prison system. Shocking, I know. At least 148 women were sterilized from 2006 to 2010, with a probable 100 more cases dating back to the 90s in the California Institution for Women and Valley State Prison for Women. And in many cases, these procedures were done without full consent, explanation, or extreme coercion. Reports being published both domestically and abroad are contending that international aid money from the United States and the United Kingdom has been used to fund forced sterilization in India. The so-called “family planning” initiatives of this kind of First World aid are an attempt to curtail the ballooning population of the Indian subcontinent—a staggering 1.2 billion people, according to the Guardian.
