I met Michelle Phan the same day I received my first laptop, a gift so exciting that I hastily unwrapped the slick white device and threw away the user manual by accident. Powering up my beloved new device, I did a quick Internet search: something along the lines of “mac tutorial.” Intrigued by a colorful Youtube thumbnail, I clicked. The video, it turned out, wasn’t a tutorial for newbie Macbook owners. It was a girl with long, dark hair demonstrating how to achieve something called a smokey eye using MAC Cosmetics. Read More
Apparently Amber Rose’s work with feminist powerhouse Amy Schumer is no coincidence: The model recently told Cosmopolitan that the Internet has transformed her into her own “feminist monster,” and her activism combating slut-shaming proves that she’s trying to become the real deal. What got her so engaged? Social media, she tells Cosmo—more specifically, Khloe Kardashian and ex-boyfriend Kanye West’s digs at her stripper past. Read More
Give a talented feminist a tiny chipboard water tower, and she’ll probably make a beautiful work of art from it. That’s what Boundless Brooklyn, a company specializing in the creation of these intricate, eco-friendly replica model kits, was thinking when they asked legendary graffiti artist Claudia “Claw Money” Gold to curate "Towers of Power," an all-female art show. Image courtesy of Random House I once sat on Gloria Steinem’s floor (more specifically, on one of her floor pillows). I won’t tell you the circumstances under which this happened because I have been sworn to secrecy, but rest assured: Her apartment is everything you’d imagine it to be. The walls are lined with books, many of them memoirs of those luminaries she calls friends. But enough small talk. Stop everything else you’re doing. We need to chat about Steinem’s forthcoming book, My Life on the Road, the first she’s published in two decades. Read More
Besides being an actor, director, husband and father, Mark Ruffalo is also an activist. He is a member of both The Solution Project and Water Defense, working towards saving our planet. He is also an outspoken feminist. Last year, Ruffalo petitioned for a woman’s right to choose in a letter detailing his own mother’s experience with abortion that was read at a rally outside the last abortion clinic in Mississippi. More recently, Ruffalo shared a rant from writer Libby Anne Bruce. Read More
Multi-talented musician Marcia Richards might be living the dream now, touring the U.S. with her London-based band The Skints, but not long ago this lifestyle was nearly impossible for her to imagine. Not only was she more of a classical music nerd growing up than an aspiring reggae rocker, but nearly all of the now-25 year old’s teenage years were spent battling Nephrotic Syndrome, a highly rare kidney disease that meant lots of extended trips to the hospital. “I lost all of my hair and was very sickly. Yesterday, the New York Times reported about a hip new trend for young women: full bottom underwear. You heard us right—thongs are no longer cool. Apparel analysts and young women themselves agree that thongs have passed, and that being comfortable is the new thing. The research coincides with this observation: according to NPD, a research company, “Sales of thongs decreased 7 percent over the last year, while sales of fuller styles — briefs, boy shorts and high-waist briefs — have grown a collective 17 percent. The problem of sexual assaults on college campuses is prominent in the media, and unfortunately, it's for good reason. A new study conducted by researchers at Brown and Miriam Hospital's Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine found that 18.6 percent of freshmen women at an unnamed college in upstate NY are survivors of an attempted or completed rape. This brings new light to the commonly used statistic that 1 in 5 college women experience sexual assault. Here’s why: Previously, the 1 in 5 statistic from the U.S. Read More
