For me and many other creative people I know, crafting has always been a solitary and selfish endeavor. Between the month during 7th grade that I holed myself up in my room every evening to work on a latch-hooked Winnie the Pooh pillow and the hours I currently spend in quirky vintage boutiques looking for trinkets to deconstruct into novelty earrings, I’m embarrassed to admit that most of what I make falls into the ‘look, don’t touch’ (or ... Get ready for a long weekend, BUSTies! Many offices and workplaces around the country will close on Monday for Memorial Day, a holiday commemorating fallen service men and women. This holiday, along with honoring the millions that have died for our country, marks the impromptu start of summer. Though the season doesn’t officially start until June 20th this year, Monday heralds the imminence of those hazy, lazy days of summer: days full of beach trips, ... Read More

My feelings for my mother fall somewhere between "Thanks for everything you've done, I'm pretty sure I'd be dead without you," to "YOU'RE THE BEST, MOM FOR PRESIDENT! MOM FOR QUEEN! MOM FOR RULER OF THE UNIVERSE!"
While neither of those sentiments are as well-articulated as I'd like, I'm sure that she'd love to hear them both. And luckily, Mother's Day is coming up, so I'll have the chance to say them to her.
The big day falls on May 13th this year, which ... Read More
Gender disparity is a problem that's deeply engrained in our society. Within the tech industry, the numbers are staggering. Carnegie Melon University took note with their famous Dave-to-Girl ratio. After realizing the number of men named Dave in their computer science program outstripped overall females, they implemented changes to their department that would attract a broad spectrum of students. Four years later, the program boasted 40% women which goes to show ... Read More

The cross stitches found at DefiantDamsel's Etsy shop are a hilarious collection of pop culture gems. There's nothing like embroidery to lend a quaint charm to a filthy "Heathers" quote. You can get the pattern and stitch it yourself, or if you're craft-challenged like me (clumsy sausage-finger hands and no attention span) you can buy the finished product in a frame. I think Joel McHale would look great in my den.

So clip-on earrings aren't exactly "on-trend" as far as I know, but ever since my earlobe ripped (it's pretty gnarly and I'm strangely proud of it), I've had to acquire an appreciation for them-- which wasn't difficult! The thing about clip-on earrings is that many of them--especially vintage ones--are like little brooches for your ears. They're often much prettier and more intricate than regular earrings, they're unique, and they stand out more. At the same time, ... Read More
There are various opinions on the day that is Valentine's Day, but me? I love it. I like hearts. I like candy. I like the color pink. I'm all for it. I'm also all for post-Valentine's Day candy sales (yum!). I think Valentine's Day is as good a day as any to spread a little love in the world, whether that means sending your bestie surprise macaroons from the macaroon queen, buying yourself a little "something something," spending quality time with your ... The station attendant at the Broadway/Lafayette subway stop is the cutest lady ever (totally blowing up her spot!). The whiteboard in her cubicle displays pertinent train information, but I noticed recently that she also writes inspiring messages and aphorisms that make even a tired, black-hearted, cranky commuting jerkface like me smile. Today, in a rainbow of dry-erase marker, she wrote HAVE A WHIMSICAL WEDNESDAY!
"Whimsy" and the other "whim" words ... Read More

As a kid, I never really understood the appeal of paper dolls. I needed a toy that could survive my rough and tumble antics at playtime, and the wispy slips of people-paper just couldn't keep up. In my tiny yet destructive hands, paper dolls easily (and often) became confetti.
Since I've grown up (I guess... I'm taller now, at least) I've mellowed out a little and have taken to watching online TV as an alternative to destroying my belongings. My newest Netflix ... Read More

Ugh, all the shop windows are reminding me that Valentine's day is coming up soon. It's the stupidest holiday ever except for the fact that it provides the perfect excuse to order a heart-shaped pizza for one and buy yourself a present. Ever since I stumbled upon this lil gem on tumblr, I've been hellbent on getting one of my own.
This would look perfect hung right above my bed to let everyone who enters my room know what exactly is up. I'm also really ... Read More
