In case you’ve ever desired a hand-crocheted beanie with an embroidered sloth patch: look no further. The Dahlia Soleil Collection features a variety of hand-crocheted hats and machine-embroidered patches created in Queens, New York. The owner and designer, Paulette, named her business Dahlia Soleil after her 10-year-old daughter. She pulls the inspiration for her work from her upbringing in Barbados, where her grandmother taught her to crochet. Paulette says on her Etsy profile that crocheting gives her an opportunity to speak without using words. Read More
It’s not exactly a secret that teen film—and really, the entire film industry—has a major whitewashing problem. Think of the protagonist of any popular teen movie: are they white? Almost definitely. Some Tumblr users who are also major Harry Potter nerds decided to combat this representation issue by creating a Harry Potter fanzine, its characters entirely people of color. First eBay, now this?! Etsy has banned users from selling spells. To get technical, a vendor can still sell them, but are prohibited from claiming that they do anything. Etsy, leave our witches ALONE! When eBay banned the selling of spells and other metaphysical objects in 2012, people turned to Etsy for their metaphysical products. It had fairly simple rules about the sale of these objects—as long as the seller provided some sort of tangible object, proof that the spell had been cast, and warned that spells may not work, everything was permissible. It has since passed down to our younger generation through syndication and popular culture. A political craze in Detroit, Colorado has taken the shocking form of IUD glitter earrings. These funky pieces of sparkly jewelry are being used to make more than just a fashion statement—they are becoming symbols of support for House Bill 1194, which would give extended funding to the Colorado Family Planning Initiative, originally set to expire on June 30. The bill would provide $5 million dollars to low-income women, giving them access to IUDs and other reversible forms of contraceptives. Read More
