This weekend at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, I had the deep misfortune of going to see the world premiere of About Ray. In fairness, there were a lot of people who warned me against doing this — especially because director Gaby Dellal did an interview earlier this summer with Refinery29 in which she deliberately refused to call her protagonist by his desired pronouns. I knew this was going to be a tricky experience for me. I did my best to go into the experience with an open mind. To focus on the story rather than the storyteller. Read More
Transgender lives are rising to the forefront in mainstream media. A new film starring Elle Fanning, titled About Ray, continues this trend. The film explores a family’s dramatic journey as daughter Ramona, played by Elle Fanning, begins the process of transitioning to Ray. About Ray does not just focus on Ray’s personal journey. It takes a deep look at how Ray’s mother (Naomi Watts), father (Tate Donovan), and grandmother (Susan Sarandon) are impacted by Ray’s identity. Read More
I have been staring at an open Word document since late Friday evening after I sat in a sold-out theater and watched my New Favorite Film unfold before me, trying to put into words what about Maleficent made me exclaim (much to the dismay of the audience members around me) “THIS IS A REALLY BIG DEAL” right after (major spoilers ahead) Maleficent kisses Aurora on the forehead, awakening her from the curse with true love’s first kiss. I've seen plenty of dudes sportin' the classic letterman jacket, but it's not until recently that I'm seeing ladies get in on the action as well. They can now be seen on celebrities and stylish street stylers alike. Read More
Our favorite "doen't give a fashion fuck" actress, Helena Bonham Carter is Marc Jacobs' latest muse and model for his Fall 2011 collection. Some of these photos are not exactly the most conventionally attractive, but that's exactly what makes them amazing. Right now the fashion world is oohing and ahhing over Elle Fanning's MJ campaign, but these photos are the real gems. A true style icon is someone who beats to the tune of her own drum. No one encompasses that more than this lovely lady. Read More
A few photos from 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld's new Fall 2011 Miu Miu campaign have emerged and while Miu Miu is one of my favorite brands and I think Hailee looks adorable in their clothes, the photo above kind of freaks me out in the same way Elle Fanning becoming "fashion's latest muse" at 13 years old freaks me out.  I think Hailee above and Elle Fanning in Marie Claire posted below look amazing and I admit, I love the photos. I feel like this brings up a lot of questions for me though. Read More
