Yet again, Carl’s Jr., the American burger chain restaurant, has feminists groaning: This year's Super Bowl commercial features a staff of farmers market dudes swooning over an "all-natural” set of knockers slow-mo'ing their way through the veggie stalls. At the end model Charlotte McKinney takes a whopping bite out of a burger.
These sorts of infamous Super Bowl commercials are pretty par for the course: It's not surprising that model Charlotte McKinney’s boobs are not-so-subtly replaced by melons, or that a clearly genetically modified apple covers up her buns. Read More

Once upon a time, beauty companies were telling women that their bodies weren't smooth enough, their faces clear enough, and their hair, shiny enough. However, after various body-positive movements in addition to all the feminist scholars critiquing the issue, companies have attempted to alter the explicit ways in which they enforce constant body surveillance. Now more recently, we are seeing women's beauty advertisements "praise" empowerment over body image. Take this new Pantene, "Sorry Not Sorry" commercial, for instance. Read More

This Sunday, May 11, we will celebrate the mothers in our lives, those women who, with the help of our fathers and other mentors, taught us how to be good people, whose shoulders we cried on and whose laughter brightened our days. In celebration of the holiday, international clothing brand Desigual released a mystifying commercial, one which many have found sexist and insulting. I might be one of the few millennials still paying for cable instead of Hulu-ing all my faves, but if you are a part of my so yesterday cable club, you might have also noticed that smart girls seem to be appearing in commercials with increasing frequency. If there are two things I love, it’s animals and Ellen DeGeneres. Since it’s Ellen’s birthday this week, she decided to break the rules a little bit and share her very special Super Bowl commercial ahead of time. Ellen stars as Goldilocks—Ellilocks, if you will—except instead of searching for porridge, she really wants to groove out to the perfect tune on the app Beats Music. Always the animal lover, Ellen ends up having a blast with the bears (and a few of their woodland friends) as they all dance “happily ever after!” Take a look below. Read More

In the past, Pantene has had some pretty fabulous commercials (did anyone else tear up at the one about the violinist?) but their latest takes the cake.
The clip focuses on men and women who are living and working on parallel paths. While the men are praised for their dedication and ingenuity, the women are perceived negatively for the same actions. Read More
Hasbro has released an advertisement for their board-game version of Zynga’s popular Words With Friends game. The game really doesn’t seem to be any different from Scrabble. The commercial features a group of women playing the word game and coming up with words like...wait for it...“bikini,” “cupcake,” and “diet.”
“Okay, well there’s no ‘diet’ in my future, so ‘later,’” says one of the women in her best Cher Horowitz voice as she plays the word “later. Read More
