An Indian university erupted in protest early this week, following the failure of administrators to appropriately respond to a student’s report that she was molested during a campus event on Aug. 28. According to reports, students at Jadavpur University, in Kolkata, West Bengal, are boycotting classes after police violently broke up a student blockade early Wednesday morning. Women protestors were “dragged by the hair and groped, and male students were kicked and punched,” according to The Times of India. Read More

A recent study conducted at Boston College shows a disturbing trend of low self-esteem in female college graduates when compared to male graduates. The study analyzed the results of identical surveys, one administered to participants during their first year of college and the second administered during their fourth year.  Researchers found that, despite high academic achievment, female participants had "worse self-understanding" upon graduating than they had four years prior when they took the first questionnaire. Sororities, often established to help women find a sense of community in male-dominated college campuses, have in some ways transformed into elite organizations that boast status and reputation. Girls work tirelessly to be desirable candidates, jump through hoops, and put up with hazing in hopes of being chosen as sister to a community of women who will help them advance both in their personal lives and their careers.   Gender neutral dorm rooms are beginning to creep their way onto college campuses across the country. Barnard College is one institution that has begun accommodating queer and trans students. Beginning this fall gender neutral dorm rooms will be offered on a trial basis. The push for gender neutral housing was started almost two years ago by the Barnard Student Government Association.
