If you do a quick Google search for “Obama’s year-end press conference” you will notice one very big trend in the results: each headline, rather than quoting the President or taking note of the nation’s biggest changes over the past year, focuses on the fact that he only took questions from female reporters. This move drew a lot of outrage from conservative pundits, which in turn—and  as expected—caused many a ... Read More
Recently CNN published a video where three women who have all accused comedian Bill Cosby of sexual assault met for the first time. If you haven’t yet seen the footage or watched the clips, I suggest you do- the women discuss in detail how fear and the social expectation of women keeping quiet prevented them from sharing their personal stories earlier The video was published alongside a corresponding article, written by investigative journalist Nina Burleigh ... CNN anchor Fredricka Whitfield was joined by comedian Amanda Seales and writer Steven Santagati to respond to last week’s viral cat catcalling video. Santagati, author of The Manual: A True Bad Boy Explains How Men Think, Date, and Mate, is a self-proclaimed expert on the psychology of catcalling, so he offers gems like this: “I can’t get into a woman’s head … but I’m a guy and I know why these guys do this [...] There is ...   Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan was just hospitalized this week in Dallas, Texas. Duncan (who is in serious condition as of today) is the first official case of Ebola diagnosed in the U.S. and if he lives through this, he may in in deep trouble with the Liberia Airport Authority for lying about his contact with the virus, before flying out of the West African airport. It is presumed that Duncan tried to help a victim of Ebola without knowing they were ... Read More
Alas, friends – a study published today by the Women's Media Center confirms an upsetting (if not so surprising) truth: male journalists and news anchors still make up a hefty majority the big old American media engine. According to the report, “at ten of the nation's most widely circulated newspapers, men garnered 63 percent of bylines, compared to 37 percent for women.” Ouch. The study did take note of a few exceptions to the ... Read More
Blogger and Fox News contributer Erick Erickson has said so many infuriating things about women and their bodies. First, he disparagingly called the 2012 Democratic National Convention the “Vagina Monologues.” Then he said women working to support their families go against science, implying that men are genetically programmed to work outside the home and to play a “dominant role” in the family.  Clearly, he hasn’t learned from ... The Steubenville verdict was announced yesterday and Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond have been sentenced to at least a year in juvenile prison facility. Mays was sentenced to an additional year because he took a photo of the underage victim. The sentence was barely out before Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was continuing his investigation to consider charges against anyone involved who hasn’t spoken up.  A grand jury trial is already in the ... Girl Rising is not a movie about oppression and victimhood. This is not to say that the nine girls that the movie stars have not faced staggering obstacles due to their gender, race, and class. These girls, who are representative of millions of girls worldwide, are survivors of natural disasters and national tragedies. They inhabit worlds where young girls are commoditized, over-worked, abused and silenced.  Suma, a young Nepalese woman, was sold into ... Read More
I go freakin’ nuts for Soledad O’Brien. She is a journalistic force to be reckoned with, and is absolutely fearless about calling people (namely blustering, biased dudes) on their bullshit. Just last week, she took down the chest-beating Senator Ron Johnson for his incredibly sexist remarks about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and a couple months back, she simply laughed in the face of RNC Chairman Reince Priebus’ contradictory remarks about ... WTF. Yesterday, CNN published an article examining how women vote with their hormones, not with, you know, their brains. Titled “Study looks at voting and hormones: Hormones may influence female voting choices,” the article has since been taken down from CNN, but this is the Internet, and it still exists in its full form here and here. The article begins with the offensive opening sentence, “While the campaigns eagerly pursue female voters, ... Read More
