The Parasitic Plant With Viking Roots
I’d always figured mistletoe for a benign holiday decoration at best, and at worst, an invitation for office-party antics in movies set in the 1980s. Aside from being a tiny bundle of green leaves and white berries under which creeps occasionally try to mouth-assault you, what exactly is mistletoe and why did people start kissing under it?
Mistletoe, or Viscum album, is a parasitic plant. Read More

Thanks to this site, it’s getting easier to find out whether or not movies pass the Bechdel test. If you’re not familiar with it already, the test simply asks whether a movie has two female characters who talk to each other at least once about something other than a man. Sounds simple, right? You’d be surprised how many of your favorites fail (A Christmas Story, Elf, Home Alone, Rudolph…) But in the Christmas spirit, let’s focus on those that do pass, and hope that each year the ‘nice’ list grows. The season of love, giving, and unadulterated stress is upon us. You empty out your wallet and watch as the last piece of lint drift to the floor like a snowflake. In the background you can hear Bing Crosby crooning Christmas tunes, but there is no joy to be had in the land of poor college students and post-grads.
Before you sink to the floor with a notepad, tissues, and possibly some Kahlüa to figure out how you're going to buy Tiny Tim that gift, check out this round up of D.I.Y. gifts found on Pinterest. None of the projects will land you in the holiday poor house. Read More

No one can ever say that Murray doesn't love his holidays- Groundhog Day, Scrooged, Ghostbusters (that’s Halloween, no?) and now A MADE FOR TV, MUSICAL CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.
No network or premiere date has been given yet, but Murray recently revealed his plans to Variety for a holiday themed spectacular directed by none other than former BUST cover lady Sofia Coppola. Murray and Coppola previously worked together on the oh-so-jolly film, Lost in Translation, in which Coppola won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Read More

Annette and Sue Amendola, sisters living in Brooklyn, New York, have been putting up a nativity scene in the lot next to their home for more than ten years. The real Christmas miracle, though, is the fantastic colony of feral cats that takes over the space annually. They curl up between the figurines and cuddle on the warm hay bale that serves as a manger and, duh, it's freakin' adorable.
According to the Amendola sisters, when they lay the baby Jesus in the manger every December 25th, the cats are quick to topple him over and claim the space for themselves. Read More

I don't know about you, but I'm super enamored of Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks, better known as Crazy Eyes and Taystee, the characters they play on the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black. Aduba, who has a strong background in theater, is easily one of the best actors on the show, and it doesn't hurt that her character is incredibly heartbreaking and complex. Brooks plays the perceived comic relief, but as the plot develops, her character, Taystee, is revealed have more depth than we thought. Read More
