Besides being an actor, director, husband and father, Mark Ruffalo is also an activist. He is a member of both The Solution Project and Water Defense, working towards saving our planet. He is also an outspoken feminist. Last year, Ruffalo petitioned for a woman’s right to choose in a letter detailing his own mother’s experience with abortion that was read at a rally outside the last abortion clinic in Mississippi. More recently, Ruffalo shared a rant from writer Libby Anne Bruce. Read More
The red carpet is our lead-in to events meant to celebrate the talent of highly esteemed artists—but somehow it's still amuck with ridiculous pageantry and blatant sexism. Female actors are bombarded with stupid questions ranging anywhere from “Who are you wearing tonight?” to, um, “Who are you wearing tonight?” And if they’re lucky they may be asked about whom they are sleeping with or how they stay fit. You thought you got that song out of your head. But it’s back.
Rock the Vote, the organization that has been trying to make voting cool since 1990, is at it again. This time, they are luring youngsters to the polls with Lil Jon, Lena Dunham, Natasha Lyonne, and more, as well as the big, loud question: turn out for what?
Midterm elections are November 4th, so be sure to vote! For what? For prison reform, for global warming, for reproductive rights - or, like Fred Armisen, because all your friends are doing it. Read More

A few days ago, I was leafing through my roommate’s copy of Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook, It’s All Good. Aside from having some rare photos of Gwyneth in her natural habitat (read: carelessly laughing while eating a vegan and/or gluten-free apple tart), what was so awe-inspiring about Paltrow’s foodie wisdom that was worth buying this ginormous, $55 volume?
Italian photographer Dan Bannino embodies this question in his tongue-in-cheek and glamorous new photo series, Still Diet. Read More

Yesterday morning, I woke up at 3AM. I got ready as quickly as possible, slipped into the perfect pantsuit, and walked out my door by 4AM. I hailed a cab, got out at the Barnes and Noble in Union Square, and I sat in line (and sat in line, and sat in line, and sat in line). For the following seven hours, I was ushered through various lines and did a great deal of sitting, standing, chatting, and wishing I had chosen footwear other than kitten heels. But at the end of it all, I had the opportunity and honor of briefly meeting Hillary Rodham Clinton.
By briefly, I mean five seconds. Read More

Despite all of the books, websites, and blogs dedicated to redefining the word “feminism”- evidently, there are still many people who associate feminism with the same time-honored stigma that has been attached to the word since women were “burning their bras in the 60s.” Maybe it's time now that people wake up and realize that feminism is not just for raging man-haters- but for women of all shapes and colors who simply want to be treated like first class citizens. Katy Perry just changed her mind about feminism. Or maybe she’s been inspired by her UK counterpart Lily Allen, who also has something to say about the word. Or, did Hollywood finally make a Feminist Theory class a requirement? Doubtful, considering Perry’s track record with cultural appropriation, sexual objectification and reinforcement of fetishes. I’m starting to think that feminism is just good for publicity or something... Read More
The self-taught photographer Danny Evans is fascinated by the ways in which celebrities are photoshopped and airbrushed onto billboards and magazine covers. In an attempt to subvert the image of the affluent, picture perfect star, he photoshops images of celebrities, reimagining them the average American citizen. In his words, his “make-unders” reveal “what’s left after Hollywood has been scrubbed off,” positioning pop culture icons within an almost stereotypical suburban landscapes, with outdated hairdos and all.
