Chrissy Amphlett, lead singer of the Divinyls, has passed away. She was diagnosed with both breast cancer and multiple sclerosis. She was 53. According to a statement released by her husband, she passed gently, in her sleep and was surrounded by her close friends and family. She was best known for the 1991 hit single, "I Touch Myself." The band released six albums before splitting in 1997. The band later re-formed in the early 2000s. Amphlett was known as a vocal advocate for self-examinations, even relating the bands hit single back to self breast examinations and early detection. Read More
Former BUST writer Sarah Verdone passed away three years ago after a battle with breast cancer. In her memory, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council created the Sarah Verdone Writing Award in 2011. The award will be presented to a different gifted female writer annually for a decade. This year’s (21+) event will take place on March 11th, almost exactly three years after Sarah’s death. “The Light That Shines” is a documentary about Jill, a young woman diagnosed with breast cancer just after her wedding. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, five surgeries, and a double mastectomy. She later lost an implant due to an infection and no longer wears a prosthetic breast to replace it. She has now been diagnosed with incurable stage 4 bone cancer. Jill's dream is to inspire other women to love their bodies and feel comfortable no matter how they look. Read More
The BUSTiest news you’ll hear all day: Allana Maiden and her mother Debbie Barrett will meet with Victoria’s Secret representatives today in order to plead their case for a “Survivor” line of bras for breast cancer survivors. Debbie is a mastectomy survivor who, like many other women in the same position, has trouble finding comfortable, cute bras. On behalf of her mother, Allana created a Change.org petition asking Victoria's Secret to help out. Read More
