Dear Halloween Enthusiasts (From fraternity brothers to grandmas to 30-year-olds who still trick-or-treat), Every Halloween, caught in the excitement of trying to make this year of spooks and splendor greater than the last, there is always a desire to be unique and different. Whether you find yourself dressed as a sexy tampon or a grape with your body covered in balloons, I hope that this letter encourages you not to be one specific thing: a racist. Post-Halloween horrors sometimes are worse than the ones that pop out in the corridors of your local haunted house. Read More
“Went to the bar, ordered a Shirley Temple, pretended to be African” – I read over the caption beside the two images depicting a woman in brightly patterned clothing, and my eyes scanned wildly as I tried to comprehend why the black, smiling face in the photographs was connected to pale, white shoulders.  The original set of Facebook photos, which depict a white woman in blackface, were shared on yoga instructor Freidel Kushman’s personal Facebook page on September 28th. The photos have since been shared over a thousand times and have over seven hundred comments. Read More
Imagine if Paula Deen cared about fixing her racist ways as much as she cares about butter? The former Food Network star posted a photo to social media of her and her son, Bobby, dressed as I Love Lucy’s Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Ricky Ricardo is Cuban-American. Bobby is not. The picture was taken from an episode that aired in 2011. Read More
A UK Footballer has come under fire in the last 24 hours after dressing up in blackface for an anti-racism campaign’s costume dinner party. According to The Cut, A.F. Vandevorst’s fashion show in Paris today didn’t feature any black models, which is unfortunately fairly common. But what struck audience members as particularly odd about the show was that a bunch of these white models had black paint coating their arms and legs. This little piece of racist oddity comes on the heels of this week’s fashion blackface controversy, which we covered yesterday. At this point it’s almost funny…just almost, though. At New York Fashion Week, designers tried to convince us that bondage is in, neon shag body wear is trendy, and unwearable structural pieces are totally hot right now. But at least they didn’t send models down the runway in blackface. Think no one would be ignorant enough to paint a white girl black for an “African Queen” photo shoot? Well think again. French magazine Número is embroiled in a public relations shit show this week after using copious amounts of bronzer to render white model Ondria Hardin “African”. Read More
