Ruth Bader Ginsburg expressed her optimism earlier in February that the court will eventually rule in favor of gay marriage. However, the Supreme Court was still deeply divided on Tuesday when they started to hear oral arguments to the historic Obergefell v. Hodges—even though anti-gay activists are also expecting gay marriage to ultimately win out. Accepting possible defeat (and being on the wrong side of history) didn’t stop anti-gay activists from making some bogus arguments during the Court's session. Read More
It’s been a big week in female superhero universes. First Gwen Stacy was bitten by a radioactive spider, and now Catwoman has come out of the closet as bisexual! In issue 39 of the Catwoman comics, Batman’s anti-hero kisses another woman. Genevieve Valentine, who took over the character’s spinoff  in October, couldn’t be happier that she’s established Selina Kyle as a “cannon bisexual,” which she describes as an “indispensable beat. Today marks the swearing-in of Kate Brown (D), the first openly bisexual governor in America. Following incumbent John Kitzhaber's resignation, Brown will become Oregon's 37th governor, and likely one of its most memorable.  Oregon's first female governor, Barbara Roberts, was with her at the Oregon Historical Society on Saturday to celebrate the state's 156th birthday.  As of yet, it's unclear who is to be part of Brown's staff, or what policies she might introduce, but it is very exciting that a bisexual woman will be at the forefront of a fairly open state. On Sunday afternoon, I went to New York’s Pride Parade to join in the celebration.  I’d never been before, and when I stepped off of the train at 42nd street I was immediately overwhelmed by the sheer joy contained in that enormous, rainbow-clad crowd of the LGBTQIAA (Lesbian, Gay, Trans, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Ally) community.  The music was loud and the crowd let loose a huge roar as they recognized each song—particularly the appropriately chosen “I’m Coming Out. Angel Haze and Ireland Baldwin have CONFIRMED that they are dating! The 22-year-old rapper and the 18-year-old model (daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger) were first introduced at this past New York Fashion Week and have been together ever since. But, Haze seems to think that media has a problem with interracial lesbian couples. Haze, who is performing at Glastonbury with Kanye West this weekend, has been challenging Hip-Hop’s misogyny by simply existing. And now, she seems to be challenging the American Media’s viewpoints on girl-on-girl couples. Read More
Someone has finally developed an app (similar to Grindr and Tinder) that focuses solely on girls loving girls. (Finally!) Dattch is a new app in the market that is directed towards lesbian and bisexual women. Built by women for women, it’s designed to surpass any of the experiences that women have on other dating apps. Dattch founder and CEO, Robyn Exton says that "You can’t just take Grindr and make it pink and give it to women and say 'Ta da!' It’s a completely different experience and product—and I think no one seems to have taken the time to do it yet." Very true. Read More
Until today, the lack of LGBT representation among Disney characters had never occurred to me, simply because it seemed so incredibly implausible that it wasn't even worth the frustration. The pinnacle of "wholesome family values" bringing a lil' diversity into the mix? Psssh! But as it turns out, I've never been so happy to be proven wrong. This past Sunday, the Disney-ABC show "Once Upon a Time" featured a sniffle-inducing scene in which Mulan (nearly!) reveals her hidden feelings for Princess Aurora, A.K.A. "Sleeping Beauty. Read More
