Today history was made.  Over 350 people found themselves in the middle of Herald Square today...twerking.  Big Freedia, the New Orleans bounce hip-hop artist and twerk extraordinaire, led the mass twerkers to set the Guinness World Record for the Most People Twerking Simultaneously.  For two whole minutes, everyone from a man in a suit and tie to an 80-year-old woman twerked their way into history.  Even a few BUST people made it to Herald square to show off their moves.     This weekend, I got caught in the crossfire of yet another Miley Cyrus twerking debate, and I realized that race is a feminist issue now as much as it ever was. For decades (centuries!), the fight against race and gender inequality have been intimately bound together, all the way from Ida B. Wells’s anti-lynching papers, which completely disrupted stereotypes applied to both black and white women, to the public outcry against the objectification of black women in Cyrus’s performances. At Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, Miley Cyrus took the stage and showed off her so-called twerking skills. For the past few days, the starlet’s performance has been getting A LOT of media attention. Some have complained that her performance was too sexy and scandalous, but others have addressed another issue—of Cyrus’ appropriation of black culture, and using African-American women as props.
