In her thoughtful and eloquent TED Talk, Roxane Gay breaks down why the phrase “bad feminist” (the one she became so well-known for) is a bit of a misnomer. It began as something of a joke with herself—Gay asks whether she’s a “bad feminist” for listening to misogynistic rap or enjoying fashion magazines. But, as Gay explains, it’s more complicated than that; feminism has become “an F-word, and not a nice word.” It is an accusation, creating a culture of criticism and fear. Read More

Haters gonna hate, but the members of The Prancing Elite aren’t letting that stop them. “When you’re a Prancing Elite, you come in fighting,” member Adrian Clemons, 24, told Kevin Fallon about the criticism the troupe faces dancing in their hometown of Mobile, Alabama. Suffice to say it isn't easy to be black or gay or both in certain red states. In order to counter bigotry and keep fighting that good fight, the Prancing Elites teamed up with PFLAG to create a PSA.    "I am such a big fan of Britney Spears. I love ALL her songs which gave me reason to create a portrait of her in Corn Flakes form," explains artist Sarah Rosado, who clearly wasn't listening when her parents told her not to play with her food.   Rosado is based out of the Bronx, where she creates images of famous female singers using cornflakes and kitchen utensils. Her inspiration? A breakfast playlist that inspires her to get crafty.
