At the presentation of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award to the iconic Catharine MacKinnon, a woman asked the following question: I worry about the future generation of feminists; should they really be watching Beyoncé suggestively dancing? MacKinnon gracefully responded that feminist pop culture must evolve as the patriarchy adapts, and that’s the kind of work Beyoncé engages in. The singer’s achievements and messages of female empowerment have been vast… and mostly ignored or cast aside by academia. Until now. Read More
Right now, it feels like we're in some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland: last night we were hit with a megaton of Beyoncé, and now we're all scrounging around in the rubble, trying to figure out where our lives could possibly go from here.  This morning, in the glorious, glorious wreckage, I unearthed one particularly dazzling gem: the spoken word verse on the track "***Flawless" comes from Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk: "We Should All Be Feminists. What did you do last night? Did you go to bed early? That's cute. While you were sleeping, Beyoncé dropped a new album on all of our heads, complete with 17 music videos and a song "featuring Blue Ivy," thus eliminating the need for Christmas this year and forever, because now we have a new holiday on December 13, and it's called Beyuletide.   Many women suffering from breast cancer face the possibility of a double mastectomy, a surgical procedure in which the breasts are partially or completely removed. In addition to the pain and fear of undergoing a major surgery, some women express feelings of grief over the loss of their breasts. For this reason, this beautiful dance, performed by a woman and her team of doctors, is an especially moving affirmation of the resilience of the female-- and human!-- body. Read More
Beyoncé posted a new video on her Tumblr dedicated to her tour photographer, Yosra El-Essawy, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.  Raised in London, Yosra moved to New York in 2006 and ended up as one of Beyoncé's photographers on her 2013 Mrs. Carter World Tour.  Starting off as a casual bystander who was the only one with a camera at a friend's wedding, Yosra has traveled all over the world photographing people and creating art. Get ready to let the awwww’s flow because this tiny human is truly adorable! Last Friday, October 4th, dance teacher Tianne King and her daughter Heaven (such an appropriate name!) showcased their dance moves on The Ellen Show. The two became internet-famous back in May of this year when Tianne uploaded to YouTube a video of the duo dancing to Beyoncé’s “End of Time.” Here’s the original video of the two: At the time of the video, Heaven was only two. Now at the ripe age of three, this little girl is making TV spots. Read More
The Queen of Rock & Roll herself – Stevie Nicks – praised Queen Bey this past Sunday saying, “Beyoncé’s great. She’s got her alter ego [Sasha Fierce], but Beyoncé the girl, the woman, is very sweet and nice and polite. She’s a good role model. She’s not skanky. I’m glad we have her.” Nicks originally met Beyoncé in 2001 during the recording of the pop anthem and (more importantly) theme song to my life, Bootylicious.  The song samples Nicks’ 1981 hit, Edge of Seventeen. I’ve never been an avid reader of the magazine Cosmopolitan (except that time I gained 15 pounds while I was abroad and the “Lose 10 lbs. in 10 Hours” headlines sucked me in – it doesn’t work by the way).  My roommate however, happens to love Cosmo and reads it religiously.  One day after work, while I was taking a short break from my very intense love affair with Netflix, I picked up a recent copy of Cosmo. Just 10 hours ago, Beyoncé Knowles debuted (via her Instagram) her new look to the world: a short, blonde pixie cut. I’m really diggin this cut, y’all, 'cause it’s nothing really over the top, but it IS just perfect for her face. I mean, Queen B looks great in anything, and this haircut is super cute! While some fans aren’t as enthusiastic about her cut, and keep referring to Miley Cyrus’s head-turning pixie, I think it looks great on her! The cut happened a mere two days after completing her Mrs. Carter world tour. Read More
