Let’s face it, lipstick is pretty cool. It takes so much skill and grace to apply it, and it oozes vintage glam. But it also contains toxic metals: eek! The majority of lipsticks contain lead, but the amounts are pretty trace. Until recently, researchers were relatively unconcerned, but then they figured out that higher levels of eight other metals are also present in many brands.

Horse is woman’s best friend. There is something so magical about a horse; I will always remember my first horse show, the smell of de-tangler, and my pony’s perfectly stunning braids. The majestic, ethereal horse!
Since I have spent my entire life strictly following the beauty routine I learned from my horses (a hairbrush? what’s that?), I was thrilled to find out about some new horsie hairstyles. The Norwegian Fjord horse, a breed ... Read More

Designer Tara Subkoff is creating fashion for thrifty cool girls while simultaneously challenging narrow beauty and style ideals. She put on an exceptional show for her Spring 2013 line for her label, Imitation of Christ. The aptly titled "This Is Not a Fashion Show" moved away from the idea that fashion has to be flawless and fall into the weird notions of what's considered beautiful or desirable.

Kristin Bauer Van Straten might be all fangs and attitude on hit show True Blood, but she has a major soft spot for animals. The on-screen vampire (that’s Pam, for those of you who’ve spent the past few years hiding under a rock) told Racked reporters that the first question she was asked about the upcoming HSN x HBO Forsaken Beauty Collection Inspired by True Blood was “Is there animal testing?” (The answer to that very good ... The relationship between women and fashion is complicated, or at the very least, layered. We all need to buy clothes. That one’s obvious, or like the first layer. The second level of this cake (I’ve made it a cake) is the clothes that we buy reflect how we are judged. Teen girls all over the internet are counseling each on how to dress like a certain persona (i.e. Wear hemp bracelets if you want to be a surfer). At the top of our cake ... Read More

Recently, I was hanging out with a friend who told me that she has been obsessed with making Katniss Everdeen braids lately. I immediately thought (after reading The Hunger Games series and watching the movie four times,) "WHY HAVEN’T I TRIED THAT YET?!" So I went home, researched what I needed to know, and started practicing. Here are some DIY tutorial videos, so you can get that Katniss-style braid too!

Many girls with straight hair tend to want curly and vice versa. In the past, I've used a curling iron on my stick-straight hair, but curls never seemed to stay, especially if I wanted bigger, fuller curls. Normally I'd just use a curling iron to flip the ends for a 60's-esque 'do, but lately, I've been really inspired by hair from the 1940's. There were fabulous curls galore!
Looking to put away my damaging curler, I turned to rag curls. I've heard a lot ... Read More
