March 8th was International Women's Day, and images poured in from around the world on social media and throughout major news organizations. We here at BUST are so excited that women's issues, as well as the call for international equality and justice, were given the attention they deserve. We hope that this annual celebration will continue to gain traction and spread the message about the need for women and girls to gain equal footing with men and boys in each and every country on the planet. We are super psyched for one of our favorite feminist-graphic-artist-memoirists, Alison Bechdel, who, we just found out, is a 2014 MacArthur Fellow. That means that Bechdel now has $625,000 to use for snacks while writing and drawing about the complexities of queer lifestyles and histories. Let’s break this down. 18-year-old Gabrielle Turnquest was just called to the bar in the UK, making her the youngest person OF ALL TIME to ever qualify as a lawyer. In over 600 years, nobody this young has accomplished that. Not to mention the average person takes the bar exam at 27. Apparently this sweet, bright girl was not even what the average age was and “didn’t fully realize the impact of it.”
I’m 22 and have not even put on my pants yet today.
Originally a Florida resident, she plans to go back to America so she can qualify as a lawyer there. Read More
