The current issue of New York Magazine features a stark white cover with the simple words "My Abortion" emblazoned across its center. This spark for discussion comes at a time when new abortion legislation is being passed constantly--leaving women with fewer and fewer options for safely and successfully ending an unwanted pregnancy. In an attempt to expose the human side of such a clinical issue, New York Magazine brings you 26 stories of abortion.  In these tales, you will learn about a girl who was offered a bulletproof vest for the walk from her car to the clinic. Today, as the state of Texas wakes up, its citizens may find more than 1/3 of its abortion clinics suddenly shut down. The worst part is, this ridiculous new measure wasn't even supposed to happen in the first place. Earlier this week, the Texas law that would potentially close many of the state's aforementioned abortion clinics was nixed by a federal judge. Now, just four days later, the decision has been reversed.  According to the New York Times' report, the law would force 13 of 36 abortion clinics to cease operations immediately after it is put into effect.   It reads like an SNL sketch: a girl scout in pigtails (Amy Poehler) rings the doorbell, only for the grumpy homeowner (Bill Hader) to tell her that her beloved Thin Mints will turn his kids into evil lesbians. At least that’s how pastor Kevin Swanson and his colleague Dave Buehner would have it.    On their radio show, the pair begged listeners to boycott Girl Scout Cookies because apparently the organization “doesn’t promote godly womanhood.” He implies that the organization’s website supports Planned Parenthood, abortions, and lesbianism. Until four years ago, physician Dr. George Tiller was the medical director of Women’s Health Care Services in Wichita, Kansas. While in school, Tiller heard of a woman who died from an illegal abortion, and vowed to use his medical skills to prevent such tragedies from happening. In 2009, Dr. Tiller was assassinated in his church, making him the eighth abortion clinic worker to be killed following the Roe V. Wade decision of 1973. Now, in the wake of Tiller’s murder, there are only four physicians remaining in the United States who will openly perform third-trimester abortions. Read More
Did you know September is Abortion Access Month? (I didn’t either...but now we both do!) The National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF) is celebrating 20 years of helping women get the care they need by spearheading a renewed effort to open dialogue about abortion in the United States. NNAF board members Veronica Bayetti Flores and Eesha Pandit kicked off the month with an article on Feministing, revealing rather shocking statistics on the current state of a woman’s right to choose. Though a legal right to an abortion exists within the United States, for most it may as well not. Read More
If you’ve been following the current abortion debate ridiculousness that’s been happening in this country, you’re well aware of the arbitrary restrictions and limits placed on abortion providers. Trans-vaginal ultrasounds, mandatory waiting periods, access to a surgical center for what is little more than an outpatient procedure; these measures pretend like they aim to protect the mother, but only protect the conservative values of the loudmouthed congressmen who champion them. After pads and tampons were confiscated last week during an anti-abortion law hearing, I had enough sense to believe people were going to go bat-shit crazy over this latest Texas travesty. They did. But after MSNBC anchor Melissa Harris-Perry donned a pair of tampon earrings this weekend to prove a point, it’s no wonder we’re still sitting here, fighting the same damn fight over our own bodies. “What a nasty skank.” “The Left are psychotic. Trigger Warning: This post contains a description of rape and abortion. There's been a lot of talk about abortion rights lately, especially with the controversy surroundingTexas' SB 5. A young girl in Chile is now experiencing the awful consequences of restricted regulations on women's health care. What happens when an 11-year-old girl is continuously raped, resulting in a pregnancy that would put the life of the unborn as well as her own in danger, and is denied the choice of an abortion? This is the case for a family living in Puerto Montt of southern Chile. Read More
[On June 30th], Ohio's budget was signed into law by Governor John Kasich. Ohio now has some of the strictest regulations on abortion access in the nation. Although Planned Parenthood will be losing over 1.4 million dollars in funding, the budget allows continued support for "Crisis Pregnancy Centers," which we've worked extensively to debunk and inform the public about. CPCs are dangerous and do not provide real, comprehensive support for women seeking out family planning resources, advice, or assistance. This personal story illustrates the importance of access to places which do. Read More
