These days, farmers’ markets are bursting with glorious greenery. And this easy recipe from Annie and Dan Shannon’s new cookbook, Mastering the Art of Vegan Cooking, delectably combines the best the season has to offer—namely, asparagus, baby spinach, green onions, and basil. Whip up a batch for dinner, or pack it for lunch, since it also tastes great at room temp. Read More

While vegetarians and vegans find themselves with increasingly tailored and green-washy options for ethical pigging out, Halloween poses a particular problem for us Americans in the bunch: animal welfare or free candy?
Both are seriously possible.
Through careful research and many, many years of trading Halloween candy with my little sister, I bring you my Top Ten (Totally Bad for You) Vegan Halloween candies. Enjoy the sugar hangover.
1. Laffy Taffys – These are vegan, though only the small ones. In a remarkable case of David vs. Read More

Gumbo is a New Orleans treat that is hard to match. Due to National Gumbo Day approaching fast (yes, it's a thing!), this Sunday, October 12 to be exact, I have complied some recipes to try if you can't make it to the soulful NOLA.
Before you begin, know that there are two types of Gumbo, and that it is a Creole dish, not a Cajun one. Type one is based on okra the African vegetable, and two, is thickened with gumbo file, which is powdered sassafras leaves, which has a Native American descent. Read More

Sometimes we get some interesting snacks in the office when we least expect them. Today we got a little hungry, so we ended up trying these freaky little things; more specifically, we tried the Chili Pumpkin Seed Crunch flavor of the Wonderfully Raw Brussel Bytes (made with real brussel sprouts!). Why not!
These... clusters... describe themselves as "nutrient packed bytes of goodness." "Goodness" is not usually what I care about in a snack, but it doesn't hurt that they are raw, gluten free, and vegan. Read More

It’s no secret that the western culture of masculinity puts pressure on guys to be over-the-top macho—an attitude which manifests itself in many ways, including cat-calling and a whole bunch of other unpleasant stuff.
Just think about the show Man vs. Food. The name says it all: Adam Richman, the star, doesn’t just have to eat every meal, he has to conquer it.
Masculine culture dictates that these guys are “real men” because they treat their food as something to be beaten. Read More

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab blends dark, romantic, and cruelty-free scents for folks who are into all things magickal, pagan, mythological, medieval, Victorian, and horror.
What does that mean? Basically, the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab team uses their 15-plus years of experience in the homeopathy and aromatherapy fields to transform ideas (everything from Neil Gaiman’s Coraline series and medieval love poems) to super-wearable, but still unique, perfumes.
They have a mind-boggling assortment of scents (and massage and bath oils, too!) available for purchase on their website. Read More
I recently came in contact with Beauty Without Cruelty. I was drawn to their array of colorful lipsticks and, of course, the idea of all-natural beauty. I found out their products are 100% vegetarian and 100% natural. The company was actually founded by an animal welfare organization, so you know they're legit. Naturally, their mantra is all in the name. They sent over a few products and I'd like to tell you a little about products like Rosehip and CandyFloss. Read More
I was recently sent some beauty products from a company called FACEFACTS BY Lori. It's a company that specializes in hand-crafted lip products, using all natural and certified organic ingredients. I love my lipsticks so I was excited to test these out! All natural has become a new priority for me, especially for lip stuff since I basically end up eating it by the end of the day. These specific lipsticks by FACEFACTS are neat because, among other things, there's no animal testing, no certified dyes or lakes, no mineral oil, no petolatum, no lead and they're 100% paraben free.
