Gloria Steinem, Allison Williams, and Tavi Gevinson got friendly last night at the premiere of MAKERS: Women Who Make America, a PBS documentary that explores the women's movement. Sadly, we were not within eavesdropping distance to hear what they were talking about, but maybe it was about world domination and the latest episode of Girls.
Narrated by Meryl Streep(!) and featuring icons like Oprah Winfrey(!) and Hillary Clinton(!), MAKERS will make you laugh and cry. Read More

Tavi Gevinson, 16-year-old fashion blogger, business owner, author, feminist, and BUST cover girl, was interviewed by Stephen Colbert on his show last Thursday. She was promoting her book Rookie Yearbook One, which commemorates the one-year anniversary of her online magazine Rookie. Women’s issues have been an intense topic in this election, and our rights are important, especially considering we make up more than half of the population. In this awesome new PSA, entitled “You Don’t Own Me,” a multitude of women stand up for--and lip synch!--to Lesley Gore’s song of the same name (Lesley herself appears at the beginning to 'approve this message'!). As the vid’s description states,
“Women, let's rise up. Our vote alone can win this election. A vote for Obama is a vote for your health and your right to choose. Read More

Malala Yousafzai, the brave young activist from Pakistan who was shot by the Taliban, is doing well. She’s currently recovering at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. Dr. David Rosser, the medical director at the hospital, stated that Malala is communicating freely and writing, and said that Malala wanted information about her condition to be made public. She can’t currently speak due to a tracheotomy tube, but should be able to within the next few days.
Malala will need surgery to restructure her skull and Dr. Read More

BUST cover girl and all-around awesome lady Tavi Gevinson was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, and we just about plotzed. Jimmy even held up the Aug/Sept issue of BUST, featuring Tavi in all her glory.
We have such a lady crush on Tavi and her site Rookie. Both do an amazing job of starting conversations about what it's like to be a teenage girl, and about feminism. Tavi chatted with Fallon about her new book Rookie Yearbook One, her hilarious encounter with Björk, and even taught Jimmy how to several different versions of "bitch face." We were lovin' it. Last night we attended a launch party for Rookie Yearbook One--edited by current BUST cover girl Tavi Gevinson!--at McNally Jackson Books in New York City. The room was packed with amazing girls, good vibes, lots of love, candy, and endless outfit inspirations.
Many of the Rookie regulars were there to read excerpts from the book, which is a compilation of the first year's posts from rookiemag.com. The quality of the writing on Rookie is impressive, and we loved seeing the writers (both girls and guys) read their deeply personal stories for the crowd. Read More

I tried to fight it, and I tried to deny it, but I can't. I love Tavi Gevinson (Maybe you've heard of her? She was on the cover of some magazine called BUST) . Even more than Tavi, I luuuurve Rookie, which is why I was sure to preorder Rookie Yearbook One. For those of you who don't know (shame on you!), Rookie was founded a year ago today by Ms. Gevinson to give teen girls content that they weren't being given in, say, Seventeen or Teen Vogue.

BUST cover girl Tavi Gevinson is one step closer to world domination. Her Rookie Road Trip just ended on June 28, and Gevinson already has a new project in the works. America’s favorite rookie is about to try her hand at acting with a role that almost sounds tailor-made for her. Fabulous writer/director Nicole Holofcener is helming the currently untitled film, which will also star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, and Catherine Keener. Gevinson will play Chloe, a girl who grows up much faster than her peers because she never received a lot of attention from her parents. Read More
