In its annual salary report to Congress, the White House revealed some disappointing numbers. Currently, female employees are making 84.2 cents to every dollar made by a male employee, despite the female presence dominating with 263 staffed to 209 males.
Considering Obama’s crowing about the pay gap, you'd think the White House would be doing better in this department. According to the White House’s website, “Under the President’s leadership, this Administration has made significant progress to bridge the gender pay gap. Read More

One hundred thousand. That's the number of signatures it takes for a petition to be viewed by the President's administration, and the quantity of names on the call to action written in honor of Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen who committed suicide last year. The petition proposes "Leelah's Law," which—if enacted—would require all states practicing conversion therapy to stop. Read More

We watched with bated breath last night during the SOTU...and were happy to find that women's equality issues came up a lot (deservedly so, of course). But for those of you who tuned out somewhere around the ISIS part or maybe missed the speech altogether, these were the five feminist items that stuck out the most to BUST editors. Drum roll please...

Back in April, a White House task force released a twenty-page report that proposed steps to address the disturbingly high rates of sexual assault on college campuses (1 in 5 women is sexually assaulted in college, often by someone she knows, often in her first two years at school). These include demanding access to accurate data from universities, engaging men in prevention, and helping schools respond effectively and responsibly to cases of assault. Read More

Well it’s about time! This week, President Obama gave a speech in Kansas City, where he talked about a letter a young girl had recently sent him. The girl had asked why there weren’t any female faces on our paper currency. She attached a list of possibilities, and the president said he thought it was "a pretty good idea.”
While we don’t know who exactly was on the girl’s list, New York Magazine has created their own list of women they’d like to see on the $20 bill (replacing Andrew Jackson, who was a total dick, let’s be honest). Read More

Were you, like many Americans, left heartbroken after Beyoncé's inauguration lip-syncing kerfuffle? Here's something to take away the sting of her (pretty rational and defensible) betrayal: a Bad Lip Reading that, like the inauguration itself, is sure to go down in history. If you can make it past the lyric, "I stroked your swine/his name was Rusty", then you are far stronger a person than I. Check out the video below:

In response to mounting pressure from activists and everyday citizens alike, the White House has finally begun to explore ways to strengthen gun control in America. And as if the mere fact of that isn’t good news enough, the solutions under consideration are executive orders that would not require the backing or cooperation of our immovable Congress.
After Vice President Joe Biden met with the NRA last week, it became abundantly clear that the White House would receive no support from the group with regard to improving gun control legislation in the United States. Read More

WTF. Yesterday, CNN published an article examining how women vote with their hormones, not with, you know, their brains. Titled “Study looks at voting and hormones: Hormones may influence female voting choices,” the article has since been taken down from CNN, but this is the Internet, and it still exists in its full form here and here.
