We were stoked to see Orange is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon grace the cover of Rolling Stone this month, seemingly an affirmation from the gods that feminism is on the rise. Framed by the magazine’s cursive logo, the two are pictured braless, windblown hair flying back in tousled waves. The image is beautiful, but it was created according to a pretty sexist formula. So this is pretty awesome: Illustrator Yehuon Chung has depicted a few of our favorite Orange is the New Black characters as their corresponding Disney women through realistic portraits.  According to Chung, "My main goal was to seamlessly combine the two characters while not having one overshadow the other. I tried to maintain the sharp and edgy tone from Orange is the New Black, while accentuating the Disney characteristics with vibrant colors."  Chung’s amazing illustrations capture unexpected parallels between the stories of the inmates and Disney stars. We all know how it felt when Beyoncé dropped an album straight from heaven into our laps without advance notice in 2013. The shock and unbridled joy of that moment can never be replicated, but when Netflix released the third season of Orange Is The New Black six hours early during primetime last night, our reaction was just as joyful. The news first broke via an announcement by Netflix bigwig Reed Hastings during last night’s invitation-only Orange Con event, held in New York City. Read More
Orange is the New Black ’s Laverne Cox is an accomplished actress, outspoken trans-rights activist, and boundary-busting sex symbol whose unique pop-culture platform is helping her change the world. I’VE INTERVIEWED A few celebrities in my day, but Laverne Cox is the first to mention “cis-normative, hetero-normative, imperialist, white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy” within the first ten minutes. Or, you know, at all. By the time we’re done chatting in N.Y.C. Read More

In January, Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox and transgender model Carmen Carrera sat down with Katie Couric to discuss their blossoming careers, future pursuits, and their experiences as high profile transgender women. After just a short moment of talk-show-interrogation-style questions, Couric hit a knowledge barrier. Read More
Like most, I binge-watched the first season of Orange is the New Black over a few days last summer. During the bleak winter months without the show in my life, I had time to reflect on its feminist, spunky, exciting and suspenseful moments. However, what I managed to forget was that this show is damnnn sexy. I mean, with a cast that prominently features so many powerful and talented ladies, you can't help but swoon. Read More
Like the rest of you, I was incredibly excited to binge watch (and complete) the second season of Orange Is the New Black on Netflix this past weekend. There has been a significant shift from character-based story lines to episodes revolving around daily prison operations and how they inflict hardships on the female prisoners. The changed not only made sense, but worked very well. Read More
I have some choice words for Kevin D. Williamson, roving correspondent of the National Review. Kevin wrote an article for the online publication, which was reprinted in the Chicago Sun-Times, stating that actress and activist Laverne Cox is not a woman. Yeah, I know, let that sink in for a minute. This white male is trying to tell anyone who will listen that the revolutionary transgender activist is in fact not the gender she identifies with simply because she was born with male genitals. I am literally clutching my chest with dismay right now. Read More
I don't know about you, but I'm super enamored of Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks, better known as Crazy Eyes and Taystee, the characters they play on the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black. Aduba, who has a strong background in theater, is easily one of the best actors on the show, and it doesn't hurt that her character is incredibly heartbreaking and complex. Brooks plays the perceived comic relief, but as the plot develops, her character, Taystee, is revealed have more depth than we thought. Read More
