The New York City chapter of the National Organization for Women will be rallying today against the latest poll from TIME magazine that said they would like to ban the word "Feminist" from our lexicon in 2015, along with the words "bae" and "kale." NOW is having none of this nonsense, even after TIME's sad attempt at an apology for the poll results.  The protest will be today (November 19) from 12:30pm-1:15pm at TIME Headquarters, 1271 Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave. between 50-51st). Hyatt hotels are currently being boycotted, with great support from feminist and LGBQT activists. Tiger Beatdown reports on the terrible worker abuses fueling this boycott, and I, for one, am pretty horrified by them. Here they are: - Branches around the country have fired many of their workers and brought on contract workers, who are temps but end up staying for months or even years, and don’t get any benefits, get paid less than regular employees, and are not allowed to participate in the hotel’s events. - There has been sexual and racial harassment of employees. Betty Friedan's 1963 book, "The Feminine Mystique," changed the face of feminism, but she's now getting a more tangible acknowledgment for her work. A monument is being unveiled today in Great View, NY, where Friedan lived while writing "The Feminine Mystique." While the author and activist received countless kudos during her life, this will be the first lasting tribute to her hard work. Friedan and Muriel Fox co founded NOW (The National Organization for Women) in 1966, and Fox has said Friedan "not only wrote the book, but then headed the organization that made it happen. Read More
