Katy Goodman premiered on the indie music scene with her band Vivian Girls in 2007, and before long we were listening to her from our dorm room radios and relying on her for all our angsty-feminist-dream core desires. Formerly known as "Kickball Katy," she's a pro at blending her riot girl sensibilities with melodic, romantic vocals. Her music is wonderfully poppy and elegant, while also comfortably dark and stormy. Upset has the makings for being one of the best bands out there right now and surprise, surprise: they totally are. Former drummer for Best Coast and Vivian Girls, Ali Koehler, takes on guitar and lead vocals, ex-La Sera member Jennifer Prince sings and plays lead guitar, and last we have drummer Patty Schemel of Hole and Death Valley Girls fame. “Kickball Katy” Goodman is perhaps best known for her work with Brooklyn lo-fi queens Vivian Girls, but on Sees the Light, her sophomore solo effort as La Sera, she shows off a softer side that’s more croquet than kickball. Album opener “Love That’s Gone” is a lilting, ’90s-style ballad full of melodic guitar lines and sweet, distortion-free vocals. “I Can’t Keep You in My Mind” is a heartfelt anthem to losing interest, while “Please Be My Third Eye” is a poppy, upbeat jam perfect for beachside dance parties. There was a time in which I was totally oblivious to how popular a band was. Usually my naivety went along the lines of: “This band is awesome, everyone must love them!” Now I know that's not quite the case and, whenever I can, I try and spread the word of awesome, small time or local bands I’ve fallen in love with.  At last year’s SXSW, favorite bands I’d never heard of included Best Coast and Hunx and His Punx, who have both since gotten quite a bit of buzz. This year, I stayed low key.
