Beate Sirota Gordon, an integral advocate for women’s rights in Japan, passed away on December 30 at the age of 89. At 22, Gordon became the only woman on the American board that wrote the post-war Japanese constitution. She created the portion on women’s rights and, having witnessed the inferior treatment of Japanese women for ten years, was focused on protecting and improving their quality of life. Read More
Here’s some Friday cuteness for you.  It’s a Buzzfeed post that’s gone viral depicting a magical place of happiness and fur called CAT HEAVEN.   Well, it’s not actually called Cat Heaven.  This place riddled – neig, COVERED – with cats is a Japanese island called Fukuoka.  For the past five years, photographer Fubirai has documented the lives of semi-wild cats that inhabit the island, that are fed fish by the local fishermen.  These cats run this place!   When I read that a cafe in Tokyo is providing customers the offer to sleep with a girl for about $80, I was like, hold the phone.  It’s not what you’re probably thinking, though--it’s quite literally just sleeping. The Whitney Museum of American Art will present the exhibit Yayoi Kusama, about the avante-garde, extremely original artist of the same name's development over six decades. She worked in Japan and the United States. It will start on July 12 and run until September 30th. This woman’s middle name is versatile. She paints, draws, sculpts, creates films, performs, and immerses you in the art, taking you to the place she has created. Her pieces are unique, to say the least. She is infamous for her use of polka dots and patterns that will blow your mind. Read More
