Belinda Carlisle was right: heaven is a place on earth. That place is Ōkunoshima, Japan. What’s so special about it, you ask? Take a seat and prepare yourself. It’s an island whose main inhabitants are… bunnies.

To visit, you can take a quick ferry ride from the mainland of Tadanoumi. The fluff balls are wild, but reportedly friendly. Their two favorite activities are being pet and eating so pellets, veggies, and a willingness to snuggle are recommended.

From vampires to aliens, ladies have been crushin’ on not-quite-human men for years. But now they’ve taken it one step further with Shabani the gorilla. Yes, unlike Angel from Buffy, he exists in real life, but he is also a primate.
After pics of him began circulating on Twitter, ladies have been flocking to Higashiyama Zoo in Japan to see the strangely attractive gorilla in person.
“It's a perfect example of the Internet society,” Takayushi Ishikawa, a zoo spokesperson, told CNN. “We were very surprised by the phenomenon. Read More

Calling all cat lovers!
One of Japan’s southern remote islands, Aoshima, is bustling with feline frenzy, eerily outnumbering the humans 6 to 1. Originally used to curb the mice problem in the boats, the cats populated and eventually began to overrun the island. Now Aoshima is swarming with over 120 cats.
It’s been named Cat Island (for obvious reasons) and is the island's main attraction. Since there are no hotels, restaurants, cars, or even stores, the feral felines are the reason people visit. Read More

Imagine being sealed with your lover in a plastic bag, unable to breathe, your fleshy bodies pushing against each other, breaking the boundaries of the self. For the Japanese artist Photographer Hal, a mundane household item—a vacuum-sealable futon container—can visually bring to life the invisible emotional currents of love-making and sexual intimacy. He seeks out intriguing couples in bars, inviting them to sit for him in the nude; he then vacuum packs them so that they might be intwined together for a brief moment, suspended in time with bated breath and sweaty skin. “Master, I have finished preparing your order;” unfortunately, female workers at McDonald’s stores in Taiwan are encouraged to adopt this language. And as part of an annual holiday competition, McDonald’s Taiwan stores participate in an outfit-of-choice competition. A McDonald’s near Taipei Station chose to dress female employees in an anime inspired-maid outfit, complete with bows, pink frills, and thigh-high socks.
I’m all for a costume party, but this seems downright degrading, like a holiday Hooters. Read More
“Women always look for true love,” explains the commercial for the “True Love Tester,” a bra designed by Japanese lingerie company Ravijour. The bra contains within its stylish cups sensors that read and transmit a woman’s changes in heart rate via bluetooth to an app that calculates your “love level.” You guessed it: when the heart gets going, the bra gets unhooking. The student artists Ayako Kanda and Mayuka Hayashi of Musashino Art University in Japan recently unveiled a gorgeous series of portraits of X-Ray and CT images of embracing couples. One might expect images devoid of flesh, readable facial expressions, and color to read as clinical and sterile, but the photographs are strikingly human: “X-ray images usually show the finite nature of our bodies composed only of matter. But these couples’ portraits reveal a pulse that isn’t normally seen,” the artists explain. Read More
Imagine a place where cats roam free, where felines own the land. That place is a real island off the beautiful coast of Fukuoka, Japan. We've told you about this before, but it's been getting a lot of attention lately, and it's just so great, we needed to post an update. Often referred to simply as “Cat Heaven,” the island drew the affections of the photographer Fubirai, who chose to photograph the cats over five years. His photographic creations capture the tenderness, vitality, strength, and downright sweetness of these semi-feral cats. Read More
