Katy Goodman premiered on the indie music scene with her band Vivian Girls in 2007, and before long we were listening to her from our dorm room radios and relying on her for all our angsty-feminist-dream core desires.
Formerly known as "Kickball Katy," she's a pro at blending her riot girl sensibilities with melodic, romantic vocals. Her music is wonderfully poppy and elegant, while also comfortably dark and stormy. Since Vivian Girls, Katy has made musical magic ... Read More

SoKo knows what she wants, and she knows how to get it. When I visit her hotel room in Manhattan, the French singer/musician/actress sends everyone else out of the room and invites me to sit with her on the bed. “If I do this,” she says, “I want to be able to connect.”
It’s this insistence on connection that’s won the 29-year-old so many diehard fans. Born Stéphanie Sokolinski in ... Read More

After 6 years of no Rilo Kiley, I had given up on ever hearing anything new from them again. While not all of rkives is brand spankin' "new" exactly, it's still a lovely treat for my ears that I welcomed with open arms. A collection of rarities and B-sides, the 16-song album has pretty much everything a Rilo Kiley fan could as for. With the release of their fourth ... Read More

I’ve been trying to listen to more "multitasking music" lately: that's my term for those artists and bands that provide interesting background music that isn’t abrasive or distracting while I’m writing or reading, but are also just as satisfying to listen to closely. This is the kind of music Sourpatch makes. A four-piece from San Jose, California, comprised of two ladies on guitars and vocals and two dudes on bass and drums, Sourpatch is of the ... Read More

Ok, I’m gonna duck and cover here, and say I don’t hate Lana Del Rey. Maybe I don’t care enough to have such strong feelings, but I’m truly perplexed by the deep hatred people have for her. Even here in the BUST office, Team Lana only comprises about 30 percent of the staff. You’d think she’d murdered kittens while wearing an NRA tube top. Look, she’s no Adele in the singing department, and yes, I object to a 24-year-old ... Read More
