Another vendor that will be attending London’s Craftacular is Rebecca Coffee’s Millinery. Coffee is a Milliner from London. She has been making hats for almost 2 years, since she quit her office job to do something more creative. With a degree in Textiles already under her belt, she enrolled in a Millinery class at Kensington and Chelsea College. She loved the course so much that she completed the full time program this past summer. Coffee uses a ... Read More
Cold outside ‘aint it! Well, to warm things up a little, here’s a couple of pics of a crafty nature from an usually sweltering day at York Hall in Bethnal Green, where things will be decided cooler on Sunday November 28 when we hold the Christmas Craftacular - less bunting, more baubles; less iced tea, more hot chocolate and soup.    Yep, the BUST London Summer Craftacular in July was hot, in both a good and a rather sweaty kind of way. But, ... Read More
During my childhood days, (oblivious, of course, to their now-glaring kitsch factor) I would often purchase posters from book order catalogs. Sad-eyed kittens playing with balls of yarn, several adorable puppies stuffed into a wicker basket, to more sad-eyed kittens huddled under a fluffy pink blanket were just some of the subjects that intrigued me. If only I’d had artist Amanda Visell’s posters for girls. These beautiful prints, which echo mid-century ... Read More
The good news is Tina Fey was the youngest person and the third woman ever to receive the Mark Twain Prize for Humor last week, and great comedians like Steve Martin, Amy Poehler, Betty White, and Tracy Morgan had plenty of great things to say about her. The bad news is PBS is lame, and they cut a part of her acceptance speech where she talked about Sarah Palin and the politics of conservative women. The unedited speech leaked, however, and went viral, exposing ... Read More
Jill Soloway- Emmy Award-winning writer, director, feminist, friend of and collaborator wit Diablo Cody, recently posted a new short film, All In the Waiting. According to them, "Soloway and writer/actress Frankie Shaw challenged themselves to make a short in 24 hours. ALL IN THE WAITING was made this for one day on earth, an on-line film festival that asked people to show a slice o' their world." A frenetic ode to the gritty, sunbaked beauty of LA combined with ... Read More
If, like me, you've always resolved to make your own clothes one day but found dressmaking patterns leave you cold, DIY Couture's range of books may have the answer! Marrying ideals of craftsmanship from the rarefied world of high-fashion Couture with those of the anti-fast-fashion DIY movement, their promotion of understanding the basic building blocks of garments is refreshing and empowering, encouraging folks to “get up to their elbows in the 3D world of ...          Remember that moment in your Facebook life when Dad joined up? (I know you’re on there, Frank Magee, but I’m not ready to talk about it.)  What about your 14-year-old cousin (when did she start wearing eyeliner??)   While an older generation’s foray into social networking has spawned public jokes and private nervousness, it’s a younger generation’s participation that perhaps deserves our ... If you’re planning on attending the BUST Craftacular in London on November 28th, one consumable craft that you can look forward to is the gingerbread creations by Maid of Gingerbread, crafted by Emily Garland of Hackney. Garland wanted a job that she could be creative with. Maid of Gingerbread is a baby company, officially created in August 2010. The idea to use gingerbread in creative ways came to Garland last May when she was invited to a circus-themed ... Read More
The engagement of Britain’s Prince William to Catherine Middleton was announced this morning by royal officials. This engagement is one that has been long anticipated by spectators, the royal family, and William himself. Waiting William (as he’s known around BUST HQ) first met Catherine Middleton 8 years ago when they were both in school at St. Andrew’s University in Scotland. The couple has had an on again and off again relationship ever since, ... Read More
Hats off to filmmaker Cassie Jaye for exposing the truth about abstinence-only programs, the stories of teenagers who buy into it, and its consequences, in her documentary, Daddy I Do. The film provides a range of personal accounts, from unwed young mothers to the founder of The Silver Ring Thing (faith-based abstinence), private interviews, and alarming statistics. We learn that The Purity Ball, for example, a Cinderella-like ball where young girls pledge ... Read More
