I recently moved to a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and I had to leave more than half my wardrobe at home in Tennessee. It’s been a rough reality because I absolutely love clothes. With fall, my favorite fashion season, approaching, I’ve been worried about how I’m going to stay stylin’ with a significantly reduced collection of clothing. It’s not quite time for me to beg my parents to send me my winter clothes and figure out where to store my short-shorts, so I decided to find a way to make my limited wardrobe stretch into the next few months. “Black Moon New York,” opening this Friday at Sloan Fine Art’s site/109, celebrates the fabulously freaky artwork of four female artist friends. Marion Peck, Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath, and Jessicka Addams. The group collaborated with gallerist Alix Sloan last year in Los Angeles with a two-day exhibition, “Black Moon,” that was inspired by their successful and satisfying careers and their rich relationships with each other. Now they are bringing their sisterhood of the traveling paintbrush to the east coast. Read More
So, it's September. I've been in denial of this fact for a few weeks because a) wasn't it just 90 degrees and humid a week ago here on the east coast? and b) I'm not going back to school so it can't be fall yet, right?  Alas, it is now more than two weeks into September and the official first day of fall is just within reach. It is finally time to unearth your favorite scarves, mittens, leather jackets and knee boots. Read More
I grew up in the quiet Chicago neighborhood Hyde Park, surrounded by the University of Chicago. For the most part, Halloween was intimate and fun: just a few of us kids going from door to door with our professor parents collecting candy from nice people. But I always stayed clear of one block.    Harper Avenue. It was the hotbed of all things Halloween, and while I ran, my peers flooded the small street. Why? Because it was truly scary. One image is burned into my mind for life: an actress, laying on a porch, pretended to rip her intestines out for all the kids to see. Read More

Oh my dear. Say it isn’t so. The designers over at sexy costume source Yandy are using a terrible misinterpretation of “twerking” to sell outfits. In a section they call “Costumes to Twerk In,” the venders market costumes that expose the buttocks. Of course, the first is an knock-off Miley Cyrus VMA costume called “Furry Party Animal Halloween Costume.” The other costumes have absolutely nothing to do with twerking except that they have cheeky bottoms; the list includes an interpretation of Wonder Woman, a ninja, and a soldier.   I’m going to be honest here: I don’t know a lot about Martha Stewart (really, almost nothing). But from what I’ve seen, I’m a fan. Somehow she makes cleaning my room seem less ominous, as though perhaps my best gal pals, my fiance, and maybe my mom could turn housekeeping into a craft fair. Read More
As a fashion lover, but also someone who seems to be perpetually late, there is nothing I value more than solid clothing pieces that I can throw on and go, while still looking chic and put together. One of my favorite tricks: the maxi skirt. Maxi skirts are so versatile; they can be great for going out when paired with a crop top and heels/boots, or casual when paired with a tank or button down and sandals. Either way, you’ll look great and feel super comfortable, while (hopefully, in my case) arriving on time. Read More
