BUST’s very own food columnist Chef Rossi is raking in good news left and right.    First, it has been announced that Rossi will be heading back to The Artist’s Room with a new one-woman show of her paintings, “Crystal Bay”. This latest collection features works in acrylic on paper that take the Provincetown Bay as their subject matter. Gallery hours are by appointment only, so snag yourself a time slot and head down to Houston Street for a gander. The show runs on weekdays from 12pm-5pm from now until Valentine’s Day. Read More
I recently stumbled across this recipe on Mouth From the South for chocolate chip cookies with..wait for it..bacon in them! As a longtime fan of all things salty/sweet and desserts with sea salt, I was instantly intrigued. My friend and I decided to test this recipe out and see how our (and other office BUSTies) taste buds would react. Thanks to a shipment of incredibly delicious Le'Saric gourmet caramels, we're starting Halloween a little early over in the BUST office. We've been snacking on smokey chipotle, lavender vanilla, butter pecan, and old fashioned caramel all day long. I was wandering around the Serious Eats website, a food blog about chow in the NYC area, and spotted this odd baked good. In Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, you can find a recipe for Frida Kahlo's Pan de Muerta, which is a traditional Day of the Dead treat made to honor those that have passed on. Sometimes there really isn't a good way to start this other than to just jump in with the meat of the story, so that's what I'm going to do. There is a young woman in this world with a Paula Deen tattoo. Lindsey Mitchell was apparently so enamored of the southern cook that she got a tat of a stick of butter with the words ''butter, y'all.'' I'm not going to judge anyone for their ink choices. Did you know that today is a holiday? A very important one at that. Yup, it's National Donut Day! If you follow that link, the Daily News has a list of places around NYC that are giving away free donuts in celebration. Yum yum yum. Also in June: pig out for National Chocolate Ice Cream Day on the 7th, National Iced tea Day on the 10th, Eat Your Vegetables Day on the 17th, National Chocolate Eclair Day on the 22nd and National Waffle Iron Day on the 29th. ...for men. Pfizer just launched a program last week that will provide free medicines for newly unemployed Americans, including Viagra. The new program, MAINTAIN (Medicines Assistance for Those who Are in Need), will focus on helping those who have lost their jobs (and health insurance) recently. Joshua Katcher (above) or the Discerning Brute will be making an appearance and doing a demonstration at this weekend's BUST Spring Fling Craftacular . In association with the Farm Sanctuary , Katcher will be demonstrating how you can replace everyday food items with vegan ones, thereby helping the environment and helping yourself become healthy. Joshua will be doing 'Vegan Cooking 101', a lot of Q and A, specifically addressing each farm animal, and how to replace those foods in everyday cooking. Read More
New Yorkers, it's time to go hungry for the hungry. On May 6, skip lunch (or bring something from home) and donate your daily food moola to City Harvest , which helps feed hungry New Yorkers, especially children. It's part of the Skip Lunch Fight Hunger campaign. You can register to participate as a team or an individual. Teams will get a kit with paper lunch bags so that members can go out on the sixth to collect donations. Last year they raised about $500,000 and this year they've made their goal $600,000.
