Bounce queen and BUSTie Big Freedia is probably the foremost authority we have on twerking, and she has a lot to say about Miley Cyrus.
When BUST reached out to Big Freedia, she sent us an official statement on the Miley Cyrus twerk-gate. She said, “Get me and Miley together so I could give her ass some lessons.”
The New Orleans musician shared some insight on the current twerking craze, its origins in New Orleans’ bounce scene, and why Miley needs to be gently but firmly told to stop. Read More

I recently caught Beats Antique at The Howlin’ Wolf in New Orleans. The all-instrumental band, comprised of David Satori (guitar, viola, and percussion), Tommy Cappel (keys, percussion), and Zoe Jakes (belly dancer, composer, and producer) fuses Middle Eastern tribal sounds with experimental world music and electronica.
Lynx, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Colorado, was the opening act and wowed the crowd with her electronic folk-pop melodies, timelessly lovely voice, and intense beat-boxing skills. Read More

I have repeatedly tried to teach myself to bounce. As much as I wiggle, my ass is just not having it. Because of my own failure (and believe me, I keep trying), I can't help but be impressed by those fly few who can truly shake dat booty. Bounce enthusiasts in New York better hold onto their hot pants: a week long bounce extravaganza is taking over the city starting next Monday, April 2nd. The week of events culminates in an Easter Sunday bounce-a-thon complete with an all girl DJ lineup and an egg hunt, sponsored in part by yours truly here at BUST. Read More

If you ever get a chance to see Big Freedia live, do not hestitate. Go. The bounce artist and butch-queen gives the most amazing live show I’ve ever seen. The audience danced so hard, you had to scrape ass off the floor. The New Orleans artist performs a spin-off of the popular down-south genre bounce, coined Sissy Bounce by the media. Sissy bounce incorporates fierce and fabulous queer performance and gender-bending in to he booty-shaking and bass dropping hip-hop of New Orlean’s bounce genre. Read More
