The Academy Awards pulled out a surprise move this year wherein everyone relinquished their winnings in the name of art, because they realized that art is subjective and awards are stupid.
There were a few good moments, though. We’re mostly thinking of Patricia Arquette, who brought the house down when she turned her acceptance speech—for her Best Supporting Actress in the film Boyhood—into a final call for wage equality (and throwing a shout out to her awesome organization GiveLove.org). We are super psyched for one of our favorite feminist-graphic-artist-memoirists, Alison Bechdel, who, we just found out, is a 2014 MacArthur Fellow. That means that Bechdel now has $625,000 to use for snacks while writing and drawing about the complexities of queer lifestyles and histories. New York City writing program Girls Write Now, which recently celebrated a 15 year anniversary as the first organization in the US with a writing and mentoring model exclusively for girls, matches high school girls from underserved neighborhoods in New York City with professional female writers. These women not only help students develop their confidence and writing abilities-- they also help the girls get published. Read More

Murphy Brown, the empowering and boundaries-pushing sitcom from the 80’s and 90’s is winning an Impact Award at the 10th annual TV Land Awards. Candace Burgen starred in this show as a successful reporter.
