Vintage filters have long been trending (thanks, Instagram!). Slap a little sepia on most photos and you can transform a passing moment into an instantly nostalgic and unforgettable pic. We all do it — because brunch look so much better when it’s all gold and hazy and looks like a perfect cut-out from a 1967 Home & Garden shoot, obviously — and filters are getting so good that frankly it's sometimes tough to tell anymore whether or not a photograph is a throwback or something you shot on a phone. Second Wavers are finally getting the small screen representation they deserve. Yesterday, HBO announced that Marisa Tomei will be playing Gloria Steinem in the upcoming miniseries Ms. The series will focus on Ms. magazine’s founding in 1971 through the eyes of both the women who founded it and the women whom it affected. Kathy Najimy (Sister Act, Hocus Pocus) is set to co-star as U.S. Representative and feminist leader Bella Abzug.

You’ve been hearing plenty about Hurricane Isaac this summer, but did you ever wonder why Isaac is called Isaac, and not Isa or Ingrid?
Until 1979, hurricanes were always named after women. The system started during WWII, when U.S. Air Force and Navy meteorologists needed a way to identify hurricanes while analyzing weather maps. Many of those meteorologists – male, of course - began naming the hurricanes after their wives and girlfriends in a twisted sort of tribute. Read More
The people over at Retronaut unearthed these photos from a 1979 Victoria’s Secret catalogue. Despite the loveliness of these ladies, is it just me or is there something about this spread that's reminiscent of 30 Rock’s “1-900-OK-FACE” sex hotline clip starring Tina Fey as “Bijou?"
