Jimmy Carter is losing his religion, and he's doing it for the ladies. He has recently spoken out and denounced the sexism that is at the core of so many Judeo-Christian-Muslim religions of the monotheistic variety. His particular brand was Southern Baptist, and he puts into exact and unflinching terms the uneasy, downright destructive relationship between feminism and organized religion.
The belief that a woman must follow the wishes of her husband, and by extension all men, who in turn follow a paternal God, in his words, '...excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities.' You can read his full essay here ; it's well worth it.
