Hi-Art is Here to Kick the Emoji Off Its Texting Throne

by Emily Robinson

Ever find emojis too bland for your lifestyle? Graffiti artist Claw Money, also known as Claudia Gold, has your back. She’s been super involved in the graffiti art of ’80s and ’90s, which catapulted her into more creative positions, like fashion director of Swindle Magazine and head of her own clothing line.

Now she’s entering iPhone app territory with Hi-Art, her new line of emoji-like stickers. The app is free and has plenty of free stickers within the app, making it totally worth the download. The sticker categories range from “Bad Apple” to “Fast Food” to “Good Hygiene” to – my personal favorite – “High Art”. Never before have I been able to text an emoji of The Girl with the Pearl Earring so easily!!!

Both created and curated by Claw Money, the app has stickers also created by “popular artists, musicians, celebrities and more!” So far, they’ve got Ghostface Killah, Ron English, and Nick Atkins to name a few. These special sections, of course, do cost 2$ per sticker pack. The app hits a major sour note here though – female artists are definitely underrepresented! I went from being super revved up about this app to super disappointed when I was merely scrolling through the artists’ names.

Aside from that, Hi-Art does give you another emoji you’ve been waiting for: the middle finger. Profanity-users, rejoice!! Your response to a sassy friend need not be more than a click away.

I’d love to see more female artists flexing their graffiti skills for this app, but I still have to show some major respect to Claw Money. Hi-Art is fun, raw, and totally savvy to today’s youth culture. The emoji may be seeing some of their fiercest competition yet – download it here!
