While most of us are unable to watch Sarah McLachlan’s BCSCPA campaign video without tearing up and frantically changing the channel, there’s a hero out there actually facing the pain and doing everything she can to help diminish America’s growing problem with abandoned pets and shelter euthanization. Laura Flynn-Amato (above), an animal rights crusader hailing from Staten Island, dedicates her life to changing the fate of puppies born in mills.
On August 24th, HBO2 is debuting its documentary about Laura, titled "Madonna Of the Mills", which will chronicle her rescue efforts as she drives through rural Pennsylvania from puppy mill to puppy mill. The documentary will air at 8pm-9pm ET/PT on HBO2. Additional air-dates are August 28th (1:30 p.m.), 29th (11:00 a.m.), and September 5th (9:00 a.m.), 10th (1:30 p.m.) and 23rd (8:00 a.m.).
Kathleen Summers, manager of the Stop Puppy Mills Campaign at the Humane Society of United States, explains, “At puppy mills, dogs basically spend their entire lives in small wire cages. They never get out for exercise. They don’t have treats or toys. They don’t have, often, clean food or water, and they’re basically there to do nothing but make babies.”
Among the 2,000 puppy mill survivors saved by Laura are Danny, a male golden retriever who was traumatized by a lifetime of incarceration, but overcame his phobias and now provides companionship to a family with an autistic son; Liberty, a female retriever who had a total fear of people, and tried to hide during training class with other dogs and owners; Vivien Leigh, a female cocker spaniel who had rotting teeth, sores on her paws and ears, and a skittish personality; and Maisy, another female cocker who was “de-barked” by a farmer who crushed her voice box with a lead pipe.
