Sixteen year old burgeoning model and actress Lily-Rose Depp just came out as sexually fluid via Instagram in the most epically casual way, and frankly, I’m ecstatic for her. The news broke by way of a photo taken for artist iO Tillett Wright’s Self Evident Truths project, a series depicting 10,000 people in the U.S. who identify as “not 100 percent straight.”  “She falls somewhere on the vast spectrum,” Wright wrote in the Instragam caption. “And I couldn't be happier to welcome her to the family."   I'm so...
Welcome Week is a brief, halcyon period at the beginning of every college student’s academic year – a time for moving back to campus, a time for involvement fairs and mixers, a time for savoring the last bit of summer before classes begin.  Some frat stars at Old Dominion University, however, had other ideas. Yesterday, the upstanding men of Sigma Nu were suspended from fraternal activities for posting controversial banners outside their off-campus house. In addition to advertising a “freshman daughter drop-off” to visiting fathers, the banners...
Just in time for back to school, we have some disturbing news from the Arizona public school system. Earlier this week, one Arizona mom, Suzanne Young, posted a picture to Twitter of a sticker her son was required to place on the inside of his science textbook. The sticker stated: “The Gilbert Public School District supports the state of Arizona’s strong interest in promoting childbirth and adoption over elective abortion. The District is also in support of promoting abstinence as the most effective way to eliminate the potential for...
Recently, armpit hair has become a widely discussed trend for women all around the world. Following the lead of Madonna and Miley, women are starting to question the whole concept of shaving their underarms.  A group of LA women posted a video yesterday called "Armpit Hair, Don't Care," which explained why growing out your armpit hair is lifestyle choice that’s definitely worth talking about. In the video, they share their own personal reasons for using their armpit hair to make a statement. The message of the...
This past Friday, a major uproar was caused by an opinion piece posted on AL.com about a sorority recruitment video made by the University of Alabama’s Alpha Phi. Spoiler alert: the opinion in this opinion piece was not a positive one. The writer of the piece, A.L. Bailey called the video, “all so racially and aesthetically homogeneous and forced, so hyper-feminine, so reductive and objectifying, so Stepford Wives: College Edition." The recruitment video, which had over 500,000 views on YouTube, was taken down after being criticized...

Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland – say their names. This is what Janelle Monàe and her team want you to do in the newest step of the Black Lives Matter movement. Monàe’s new anthem, “Hell You Talmbout,” has gained nationwide attention since its release. The main chorus is a chant, telling listeners to say the names of deceased victims of police brutality – obviously a song to be used during protests, take a listen: Because of its growing popularity, Monàe was invited to perform on the...
The esteemed Rachel Maddow made the pointed observation that media outlets cover Hillary Clinton "like a criminal," dissecting her every move for shreds of news and dog-piling at the slightest hint of scandal. Their attention is not so much flattering as unavoidable – a norm of political life Clinton has likely long since accepted. So too is the sexism, and not only from reporters. We’re still sixteen months out from peak election season, but already, voters in a July Associated Press poll demonstrated an overall drop...
In a recent story published by The New York Times, 21 Yazidi females came forth with their tales of rape from Islamic extremists.  In the past year, over 5,000 Yazidis were kidnapped, while an estimated 3,144 are still in captivity. In the eyes of the ISIS-run Islamic State, the Yazidi religion is wrong, which is probably why the state will not reconsider its slavery policy. On August 3, 2015, after the invasion of Mount Sinjar, systematic slavery became a legal part of the state. As stated in...
A 22-year-old trans woman of color (TWOC) found dead in a vacant field in Texas on July 29th has finally been identified as Shade Schuler. Schuler is the 13th trans woman murdered in the United States in 2015, meaning this year's total already exceeds the number of transgender women killed in 2014.  When found, Schuler was originally identified as a male. With help from Trans Pride Initiative’s Nell Gaither, though, authorities correctly identified Schuler as a trans woman, ending a two-week investigation. Despite this correction, many news...
Have you ever been pulled over, say for running a stop sign, maybe even a red light, and end up on the side of the road with an officer’s hand in your vagina? I haven’t, but Charnesia Corley has. After running a stop sign, an officer pulled her over and claimed to have smelled marijuana. After searching her car for an hour - and not finding anything - the officer called in a female deputy to conduct a cavity search. Right there. On the side...
