In the most recent account of racially motivated physical violence, South Carolina Deputy Ben Fields was filmed dragging a young black woman out of her desk at Spring Valley High School, throwing her across the classroom, and handcuffing her in front of her terrified peers. MSNBC reports that Fields, who has a daunting slew of complaints on his record about past instances of racially motivated abuse to Spring Valley students, will be fired. Since the incident on Monday, the cop has been placed on unpaid administrative...
The latest Congressional Giant Waste of Time, A.K.A. hearing on Benghazi, was a GIANT WASTE OF TIME. Republicans should shut the fuck up about Benghazi. It has been a sham to prevent Clinton from becoming president and executive ordering them all off the island and everybody knows it. Shut. The. Fuck. Up. Here are five reasons they need to SHUT THE FUCK UP.   1. The amount of money and time wasted The Minority Site of the Select Committee on Benghazi estimates that $4,819,205 (as of 3:30 p.m....
In a speech earlier today at the National Issues Conference of the Women’s Leadership Forum, Chafee announced the end of his bid to be the Democratic nominee for president in 2016. No surprise, given his useless and unmemorable debate performance last week. Here was a bit from his speech to a room full of female leaders: Since today is all about women’s leadership it reminds me of one of my favorite Greek plays; Lysistrata, a comedy from about 400 BCE by Aristophanes. In that play, a...

When former governor Mitt Romney wanted to add women to his cabinet, he asked his staff to find qualified female candidates. What they brought back, Romney would later explain during his 2012 presidential bid, were “binders full of women.” That comment inspired an Internet firestorm, but also an annual conference: Bindercon.  On paper, Bindercon is a two-day summit on November 7 and 8 gathering women and gender-nonconforming writers in NYC to explore the “tools, connections and strategies they need to advance their careers” and promote a...
The entire Democratic debate on CNN was an intellectual oasis in the desert of nonsense that is the Republican primary. Aided by Anderson Cooper’s sharp moderating, the candidates managed to step outside their talking points, and talk like humans with nuanced thoughts on complicated issues. Though we are still fairly set on Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton, we here at BUST were unable to come to a consensus on a “winner.” But we have plenty of time to decide. So for now, let’s all just...

Lucie Beeston loves “bright colours, loud noises”, which she translates into her “bonkers” hand-cut wooden jewellery brand Lucie Ellen. Lucie started out making jewellery just for herself and her friends. Originally a graphic design student, she quit to get crafty, making jewellery and homewares from smashed and chipped ceramics. She then turned to her favourite materials - wood and paper - to make jewellery and cute things for your home. Lucie moved from the Suffolk countryside to East London, set up a little studio in her back garden, and has...
In the wake of yet another mass shooting at a school, it is sickening how the feelings of fear and helplessness come over us in a familiar way. Every time I read a headline about a shooting, I have the same reaction: my hands go cold, my stomach drops, and I shove the lump in my throat away like I'm dry-swallowing a big pill.  Portland-based community college instructor Melissa Duclos has had enough with politicians and their lack of action to protect the safety of our country....

Thursday morning, at least ten people were killed  and several more wounded in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The shooter was a 26-year-old male student who, according to Slate, died in a firefight with police. This is old news. Everyone in America knows it is old news. President Obama reminded us in his speech yesterday  that this is old news. That this situation, his own response, the rest of the country’s response, all of it is “routine.” “We’ve become numb to this” was Obama’s refrain.   Predicting...

Bill Nye acted in solidarity with women’s reproductive rights when he released a short video condemning the misinformation used to fuel anti-abortion arguments. He also offered some great life advice to white dudes in power along the lines of get your facts straight and stop trying to control women’s bodies.  Bill Nye is a powerful example of an ‘ally’.  He uses his expertise and influence to talk about the cause of reproductive rights without trying to speak FOR women. He emphasizes the importance of women’s voices in the...
