Elimination Communication? Diaper-Free Babies

Elimination communication. I had to look it up. Looks like the next big trend in alternative parenting is going diaperless. You heard me right... Diaper. Free. Babies.

Let me just quote a sentence from the first paragraph of Baby’s Latest: Going Diaperless: “Ms. Shapiro scattered little bowls around the house to catch her daughter’s offerings, and her sister insisted that she use a big, dark marker to mark the bowls so that they could never find their way back to the kitchen.” Ms. Shapiro is a child-rearing coach and a doula, who advocates for a Diaper-Free Baby.

Elimination communication is all about keeping an open line of communication between baby and mama. Listen for the clues and watch for the signs. Hopes are, the child will start to associate the feelings of elimination with the toilet.

The problems arise when baby is out of the house and nature calls. The parents who practice E.C. have been known to help baby with the business between parked cars or beyond. The practice is viewed as an alternative to laundering diapers and dealing with the costly disposable diaper racket. Let us also note that this is trending in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and other hip urban centers, where it is nearly impossible to find a bathroom.

We are still left wondering if this is going to catch on…
