Did you know that October was Domestic Violence Awareness month? Neither did I, but I think I'll celebrate this year by not going to Nevada, which, according to a recent study, ranks #1 in the rate of women murdered by men for the second year in a row. In the annual report from the Violence Policy Center (VPC), which analyzed 2006 homicide data, Nevada, with a rate of Nevada, rate of 3.27 murders per 100,000 is ranked highest, followed by South Carolina at #2 with a...

I have a confession to make: I have a strange affection for Governor Sarah Pailn. I mean, I find her really compelling and charasmatic. And that's difficult, because I really hate her politics. If you want to feel what I'm feeling, just imagine for a moment that Palin was on our side. Imagine that she was pro-choice, pro-environment, and all the rest of it. Now how excited would you be that we had a woman running for the highest political office who could raise 5...

Did anyone else out there read Eve Ensler's lacerating indictment of Sarah Palin this week in the Huffington Post ? If you missed it, here's a juicy excerpt: 'I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the...

Hell to the yes! Above, Alice Paul toasts women's right to vote, a fight she faught like a warrior (spending time in jail and going on a hunger strike, etc), and which was ratified 88 years ago today (see Emily's post, below). You've probably heard of Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but today it's time to take a moment and give thanks to Ms. Alice for all she did. To learn more, visit http://www.alicepaul.org, or watch HBO's movie, Iron Jawed...

Harassment on the street and in the subways is nothing to joke about or shrug off, and NYC’s MTA system is finally taking notice. After initially pulling anti-harassment ads off of the subway a month ago thinking it would encourage harassment (what?!?), they have agreed to put the ads back into the subway cars. With the help from RightRides, Girls for Gender Equity, NOW-NYC and other organizations a subway safety committee is also being created!  Emily from Hollabacknyc.com says that this committee will be advocating...
Election time is just around the corner (that or the rest of us are just eagerly anticipating when it actually is) so I thought I would post a few links today on getting to know your candidates on a somewhat under reported aspect - their stances on women's rights.  Read more for helpful (in my opinion anyway) links. Helpful John McCain links: McCain's Views on Choice  McCain's Views on Domestic Violence America Blog: McCain  ABC News: McCain  Not entirely McCain related but it amused me.   Helpful team Obama*...
So while riding the information super highway today, i came across this little gem over at the ever excellent blog Feministing. How utterly amazing right? First, she gets to hang out with Flight of the Conchords all the time. Then, she gets to hang out with Jon Stewart and do this:  Yeah, that's right. Hillary's defeat had nothing to do with sexism. ...

Huh? Rape apparently does not happen in Kansas City.Coming soon, to a courthouse near you. -Jen the intern ...

Summer is almost officially upon us. The time for drunken 3 am stumbles home, the time for random party hook ups, the time for putting ourselves in generally risky situations for no real reason. This website couldn't have come to my attention at a more perfect time. It's a self defense video geared toward women, especially those of us (like myself) with no martial arts training or even the slightest idea of how to defend themself. It's called 'Just Yell Fire,' as apparently when you...
