Yesterday at my part-time job, I was discussing with my manager my plans to start graduate school in January. When he asked me what I was going to study, I cheerfully replied that I was going to get my master's degree in Gender Studies. "What's that?" he asked. "You know. Sort of like Women's Studies," I said, brilliantly describing my program of study. "...What's that?" he asked again. Dumbfounded, I ever so eloquently explained "Like...feminism and stuff?" (My admission is being rescinded right about...now.) "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!" he proclaimed a third...

PETA has released a new ad in response to the controversy surrounding TSA screenings, causing a rumble of its own by displaying (yet another) picture of a close-to-naked woman promoting their cause with her (thin) body. PETA's staff is not new to accusations of being sexist with their ads, and issued a thoughtful response last year to a reader of feministsforchoice.com explaining their motivations.  So, what do you think, readers? Is PETA promoting sexist body standards and seeking to profit from women's (naked) bodies or is all...

I'm a huge hater on abstinence-based sex ed.  I've never been able to fathom why omitting vital, straightforward information about reproduction from young women & men is supposed to be in any way helpful.  Opponents of sex ed make it seem like teaching these lesson plans is as steamy as one of my Grandma Jeanne's "bosom heaver" romance novels (with Fabio airbrushed on the cover no less).  It's all kinds of messed up to lie to kids, then expect them to make informed choices that...

Female celebrity musicians generally look as though they get along, but last night there was a rift. They seemed to sense a threat. Rhianna, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha all reportedly acted like they were friends with rap artist Nicki Minaj, and then started taunting her. Each groped her butt and then laughed about how fake it was. This was Nicki’s first time at the American Music Awards, and I doubt she expected such a two-faced welcome from her fellow female artists. According to the source:...
In the past few weeks, there's been alot of attention paid to the subject of bullying in high school, and, in particular,  the bullying  of homosexuals. The current round of media attention to  his subject began with the tragic suicide of  Tyler Clementi, who jumped off the George Washington Bridge, to his death, after  having been secretly videotaped in his college dorm having sex with a man, and then having the video spread around campus. Everyone from CBS News to Madonna to Sarah Silverman  to...
During my childhood days, (oblivious, of course, to their now-glaring kitsch factor) I would often purchase posters from book order catalogs. Sad-eyed kittens playing with balls of yarn, several adorable puppies stuffed into a wicker basket, to more sad-eyed kittens huddled under a fluffy pink blanket were just some of the subjects that intrigued me. If only I’d had artist Amanda Visell’s posters for girls. These beautiful prints, which echo mid-century children's book illustrations and classic kid's story narratives, feature girls skydiving (“I am a...

Remember that moment in your Facebook life when Dad joined up? (I know you’re on there, Frank Magee, but I’m not ready to talk about it.)  What about your 14-year-old cousin (when did she start wearing eyeliner??)   While an older generation’s foray into social networking has spawned public jokes and private nervousness, it’s a younger generation’s participation that perhaps deserves our focus.  Our moms and dads are adults, and developed into adults without either the attention or influence of a virtual community. ...

The engagement of Britain’s Prince William to Catherine Middleton was announced this morning by royal officials. This engagement is one that has been long anticipated by spectators, the royal family, and William himself. Waiting William (as he’s known around BUST HQ) first met Catherine Middleton 8 years ago when they were both in school at St. Andrew’s University in Scotland. The couple has had an on again and off again relationship ever since, leading many American and British media hubs to give Catherine the...
“I prefer the women because we have a different aesthetic than the men” My great-aunt passed away last month, but because she chose to be cremated the ceremony was this weekend. It was a two parter, with a party to celebrate her life on Saturday and a proper burial on Sunday. I lived with Carol for several months last year and got to know her well. She was an artist and an adamant feminist. She grew up like a woman born in the 1930’s should; she...
