alt right blogger

It’s common knowledge that the internet can be a cesspool of bigoted beliefs. The image that comes to mind is usually of an overgrown kid trolling people from his parent's basement, but that is only one small piece of the puzzle. Meet Ayla, also known as @apurposefulwife. She is a Mormon mom of 6 and self-described #altRightPosterGirl. Increasingly, these alt-right voices are not coming from anonymous sources, but from carefully curated social media entities.

Her blog, Nordic Sunrise, is focused on preserving "traditional European values." Arguing that there is an epidemic in the Western world, she writes, “Feminism, homosexuality, atheism, hedonism, and transgender-ism are being promoted while the hard work and priorities of family and faith have all but died away and this pattern is killing us, physically and spiritually.”

Ayla has been gaining attention with her pro-white memes and stunts like her "white baby challenge."

White Baby

Much to the dismay of many members of the Mormon Church, most of her social media combines Mormon scripture and concepts with alt-right themes and rhetoric. Nordic Sunrise promotes white supremacy disguised as "white heritage pride." Most recently, she received media attention over a post, "Mormon 'Rap' and the Destruction of White, Western, Mormon Culture" that claimed Mormonism and traditional values were being corrupted by black culture. "If you want to see the future of Mormonism" she writes, "look no further than the rapper James the Mormon. Just as inner city Chicago used to be full of hard working, Christian, Poles, Germans and Irish but is now overrun with black, ghetto culture, it seems Mormonism and Utah are the next target for cultural destruction and what’s worse, the Mormons themselves are welcoming it."

While most of us would like to think she is singular in her hate-filled rhetoric, what is, in fact, notable is the sheer number of followers she has, around 22,110 and counting. Venturing into alt-right media makes me grateful for our feminist little corner of the internet.
