We at BUST would like to wish a very happy birthday to the legendary Grace Jones!
Jones started her modeling career shortly after immigrating to New York when she was 13. Her androgynous appearance catapulted her to international recognition, appearing on the covers of Vogue and Elle while working with fashion houses like Yves St. Laurent. She forayed into the music world in 1977, when she signed with Island Records, and went on to release many popular albums. Jones also acted in many mainstream films; her work in Conan the Destroyer, A View to a Kill and Vamp earned her nominations for Saturn Awards’ Best Supporting Actress. Jones has even been cited as an inspiration for many of the badass women we admire today, including Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Lorde!
To celebrate, we’ve collected 19 photos and quotes to celebrate the wonderful Grace Jones. 69 has never looked so damn good.
"I just go with the flow, I follow the yellow brick road. I don't know where it's going to lead me, but I follow it."
"We're not perfect; we all have things that people might not like to see, and I like to show my faults."
"I go feminine, I go masculine. I am both, actually. I think the male side is a bit stronger in me, and I have to tone it down sometimes. I'm not like a normal woman, that's for sure."
"I believe in individuality, that everybody is special, and it's up to them to find that quality and let it live."
"I never do what anyone else is doing. I could walk away from music and become a farmer or do some crochet. The worst thing in life for me is to do something I'm not happy doing."
"One creates oneself."
"I only move forwards, never backwards, darling."
"Hiding, secrets, and not being able to be yourself is one of the worst things ever for a person. It gives you low self-esteem. You never get to reach that peak in your life. You should always be able to be yourself and be proud of yourself."
"I'm always rebelling. I don't think I'll ever stop."
